Brian Williams was a Disgrace Silencing Ron Paul, Rick Santorum (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The four remaining GOP presidential candidates debated in Tampa, Fla., on Monday night on NBC, moderated by the "NBC Nightly News" grandstanding anchor Brian Williams. This spectacle was mostly a dialogue between former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. During the first part of the debate, Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum were basically left out. BuzzFeed reported Paul and Santorum spoke less than five minutes for the first one-third of the program.

This program was a massive disgrace. Williams should be ashamed of himself for generally excluding Santorum and Paul. If these debates aren't going to strive to give equal time to the participants, why do the organizers even bother to invite those who they are going to disrespect?

According to The Hill, during the first 40 minutes, Paul only got to speak once and Santorum got to talk twice. Watching the first part of the debate made me feel very uncomfortable because I kept thinking about how Paul and Santorum must've been feeling being left out and having to stand and listen to long blocks of dialogue between Romney and Gingrich. They traded barbs over things like the former's charge of the latter being involved in "influence peddling," as reported by ABC News.

This debate lasted just less than 100 minutes, as reported by USA Today but when factoring in the irritating commercial breaks, it was even less. This debate was a wasted opportunity, but Santorum and Paul didn't protest, acting very polite despite being disrespected by Williams.

Yet the establishment media has been signaling the GOP race is down to two candidates, for on Sunday, the host of "Face the Nation," Bob Schieffer, called for a one-hour debate between just Gingrich and Romney, according to HuffPost Media.

I am tired of debate moderators who do not strive to let everyone have as close to equal time as possible. The establishment TV media continues to try to influence how the public will vote, especially when they deny equal time to all the debate candidates.

The public shouldn't take the bait, but instead be discerning and be informed outside of prime time, because an informed citizen is the biggest deterrent against the biased, scheming talking heads on TV like Williams.

France's Juppe to push Arab League plan at U.N. (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? France's Foreign Minister Alain Juppe will address the U.N. Security Council in New York on Tuesday in an effort to push through an Arab-backed resolution for political change in Syria.

"The minister will be in New York on Tuesday to convince the Security Council to meet its responsibilities as the crimes against humanity committed by the regime get worse," Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said on Monday.

Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby left for New York on Sunday where he will brief representatives of the Security Council on Tuesday, seeking support for the Arab peace plan, which calls for President Bashar al-Assad to step down.

France and Britain crafted the resolution in consultation with Qatar and Morocco, as well as Germany, Portugal and the United States. It is intended to supersede a Russian draft that Western delegations say is too accommodating to Assad and also no longer relevant in light of the recent Arab League proposals.

Veto-holding Russia, which said last week that parts of the Western-Arab draft resolution were unacceptable, said on Monday it wanted the Council to hear directly from the Arab League's observer mission in Syria before discussing any resolutions.

The French-backed draft resolution, obtained by Reuters, calls for a "political transition" in Syria. While not calling for U.N. sanctions against Damascus, it does say that the Security Council could "adopt further measures" if Syria does not comply with the terms of the resolution.

"It is time the Security Council acts to find a solution to this crisis," Valero said in a daily briefing to reporters.

France has been prominent in Western efforts to try to force Assad to end a crackdown on protests and has suggested a need to set up zones to protect civilians - the first proposal by a Western power for outside intervention on the ground.

Escalating bloodshed prompted the Arab League to suspend the work of its monitoring mission on Saturday. Arab foreign ministers, who have urged Assad to make way for a government of national unity, will discuss the crisis on February 5.

"The situation in Syria is appalling and is just getting worse," Valero said. "Everything must be done to put an end to the spiral of violence that has led to the bloody repression which we've seen for the last 10 months."

Juppe made a similar address in March to the 15-nation council when he urged it to adopt a resolution that would authorize a no-fly zone against Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. The resolution passed, with Russia and China abstaining, and within two days NATO air forces were bombing Libya.

Given Russian and Chinese objections now, and Syria's position, unlike Libya, at the heart of Middle East power politics, such an intervention seems unlikely as yet.

Super Bowl brings business to town | WLFI - Lafayette, Indiana

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - With Super Bowl 46 just a week away, some Lafayette businesses are preparing for extra crowds to come to town.

Buffalo Wild Wings Manager Michael Jones said he and his staff are expecting big crowds for Super Bowl 46. He said normally for Super Bowl weekends, Buffalo Wild Wings has a packed dining room and is constantly busy with take-out orders for parties. That's why he said his restaurant is extra prepared for this year's big game to take place a little closer to home.

"We get extra wings, boneless. You know, the sides: celery, bleu cheese, ranch. We get extra bottles of the sauce and the seasoning so that way people pre-ordered a day in advance and that way they can bring it home, reheat it themselves, and add their own sauce," said Jones.

Jones said he and his staff are not only preparing for the Super Bowl but also for two other events taking place weekend.

"Saturday is the Purdue/I-U game so we should have a big crowd for that. Then afterwards we have the UFC paperview," said Jones.

Amanda Gordon of the Lafayette and West Lafayette Convention and? Visitors Bureau in late December said since Lafayette was chosen as a Super Celebration Site by? the NFL, local hotels are also expecting to be busy next weekend.

"Up to three hours out from the actual location of the Super Bowl, people will see hotel rooms and guests will stay in those areas. Because of our accessibility off the interstate, we were obviously a natural site," said Gordon.

Gordon said having the Super Bowl so close to the Lafayette area will really help boost business for the local for hotels and restaurants. Kick off is at 7 p.m. next Sunday.

Blood found at home where Maine tot was last seen (AP)

PORTLAND, Maine ? Investigators have been analyzing blood found in the basement of a Maine home where a missing toddler was last seen six weeks ago, an official said Saturday.

The blood was found early in the investigation into Ayla Reynolds' disappearance from her father's home in Waterville, state police spokesman Steve McCausland said. The state crime laboratory has been running tests on it since then, but it was unclear when results would be available.

Ayla's father, Justin DiPietro, reported her missing Dec. 17. He had put her to bed the night before in the home he shares with his mother and said she wasn't there the next morning.

McCausland called the discovery of the blood "troubling." He declined to discuss how much blood was found in the basement or how old it might have been.

Ayla was 20 months old when she disappeared. She had been staying with her father at the time in the house where DiPietro lives with his mother. Her mother, Trista Reynolds, lives in Portland.

DiPietro told police she was wearing green pajamas with polka dots and the words "Daddy's Princess" on them and had a soft cast on her broken left arm.

DiPietro, his mother and a third adult were home the night of Dec. 16, and police have questioned all three, McCausland said.

"We believe they have not given us the full story," he said.

Trista Reynolds was participating in a vigil Saturday for the girl and could not be reached for comment. DiPietro did not immediately return a message left on his cellphone.

The two came face to face for the first time since Ayla's disappearance at the vigil on the City Hall steps in downtown Waterville, said Bob Vear, a friend of the DiPietro family who organized the vigil. They spoke privately for about 10 minutes before giving each other a hug, Vear said.

A woman who answered DiPietro's mother's cellphone hung up after being asked about the blood.

The blood was among hundreds of pieces of potential evidence that were removed from their home as part of a criminal investigation into the girl's disappearance. The discovery of the blood was first reported Saturday by WCVB-TV in Boston.

Ronald Reynolds, who is Trista Reynolds' father, said DiPietro hasn't been forthcoming with his version of what happened or what he knows. DiPietro has said he took a polygraph test, but has declined to say what the results were.

"They haven't given the full story, but this family has gone through so much pain, so much hurt," said Reynolds, who lives in Portland. "We're going into two months now and don't know anything, and all we get is the runaround."

Vear said he was first made aware of the blood sample Dec. 24, but he doesn't think it'll amount to anything.

"I cut myself at home all the time," he said. "It could be Justin's, it could be the baby's. There were five or six people in the house that night."

Farmers Insurance Open 2012 Leaderboard Update: Spencer Levin ...

Conditions were ripe for scoring on Thursday as the 2012 Farmers Insurance Open got underway at Torrey Pines. And judging from the leaderboard, the North Course was the place to be as the field flip-flops over the first two days -- those that played the South Course on Thursday get the easier task, at least in theory, on Friday. Of those near the top of the leaderboard, 16 were on the North Course, with just one playing South Course to open the tournament --Marc Turnesa, who sits four shots back.

Spencer Levin and Kyle Stanley each fired 10-under 62s on Thursday to surge to the top of the leaderboard. They share the lead by a stroke, with Bill Haas, who finished with a 9-under 63, in hot pursuit. Four players, including Vijay Singh, are two shots back of the lead after one round, sharing a tie for third-place at 8-under.

Among the other notables, Phil Mickelson was eaten alive by the South Course and sits at 5-over after an opening round 77. He's two shots out of dead last, an honor captured by Tommy Gainey, who also played the South Course. Bubba Watson is tied for 37th after a first-round 69 on the North Course.

New Xbox said to be six times as powerful as the Xbox 360 (Yahoo! News)

Will Microsoft's next machine blow its current console out of the water?

The current?video game console generation is entering its twilight years, and with that inevitability comes the unceasing rumors of what each company's next hardware will be capable of. Nintendo has already shown its hand by?unveiling the Wii U, and now some tasty tidbits are beginning to surface regarding the next Xbox from?Microsoft. Popularly nicknamed the Xbox 720, some new, well-sourced rumors suggest that it will be six times as powerful as the current console.

The?Xbox 360 is no slouch, and it can still play host to the?hottest new releases, but the hardware is approaching its 6th birthday and some serious advancements have been made in the world of graphics processing in the last half decade. The new Xbox will reportedly run on a derivative of AMD's 6670 graphics chip, which supports 1080p HD, 3D, and linking to multiple external displays.

Compared to the Wii U, the Xbox 720 should be roughly 20% more powerful, though the stats of the two systems appear to be close enough that players may not notice a difference. Like Microsoft, Sony has yet to officially reveal anything about its followup to the?PlayStation 3, but based on their console release history, a new machine is undoubtedly in the works. Where the PlayStation 4 will stack up in comparison to the new systems by Nintendo and Microsoft is anyone's guess.

Planet Earth poses for new high-res NASA 'Blue Marble' portrait

Suomi NPP is equipped to do far more than provide Earthlings with some stunning views of their home planet. Five instruments are traveling aboard the first-of-its-kind satellite, designed to improve both short-term weather forecasts and the overall understanding of long-term climate change.

NASA's newest Earth-watching satellite has sent back a breathtaking image of our "Blue Marble" that offers a taste of the orbiting observatory's vast capabilities.

The image release comes just a day after the satellite was given a new name: Suomi NPP, named for the late meteorologist Verner E. Suomi, a scientist hailed as the father of satellite meteorology.

Previously, the?satellite was known simply as NPP, an acronym for a mouthful: the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System Preparatory Project.

The new name was announced Tuesday (Jan. 24), at the annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society in New Orleans.

Suomi NPP is equipped to do far more than provide Earthlings with some stunning views of their home planet. Five instruments are traveling aboard the first-of-its-kind satellite, designed to improve both short-term weather forecasts and the overall understanding of long-term climate change.

In addition, the technology aboard is designed to monitor natural disasters, from volcanic eruptionsto wildfires to floods.

The portrait above was compiled from images taken on multiple passes of the planet Jan. 4. It joins other spectacular images of our home planet, including the iconic one taken by the crew of Apollo 17 in 1972 ? one of the most widely distributed images in history ? and?views taken by retreating space probes?such as Voyagers 1 and 2.

NASA launched the satellite Oct. 28, 2011, from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

The mini-van-sized satellite is designed to operate through the end of 2016.

Can Europe Oil Embargo Force Iran to Back Down on Nuclear Program? (Time.com)

The European Union has raised the takes in the standoff over Iran's nuclear program. E.U. foreign ministers on Monday adopted the most far-reaching package of sanctions yet on the Islamic Republic, including an embargo on the oil exports that are Iran's economic lifeline, and measures against the country's central bank that will restrict its ability to engage in international trade. European governments have now adopted an immediate ban on all new oil contracts with Iran, and a gradual phase-out of existing contracts between now and July 1. The measures also ban trade in all petrochemical products, gold, precious metals, diamonds, banknotes and coins.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the oil embargo was part of "an unprecedented set of sanctions," and he urged Iran to "come to its senses" and resume negotiations on its nuclear program. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said the concern underlying the new measures was "not a question of security in the region, it is a question of security in the world." And E.U. foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the sanctions aimed to "make sure that Iran takes seriously our request to come to the table". Although Iranian officials have signaled a readiness to hold new talks, Ashton says Tehran has yet formally responded to the?letter she sent in October calling for a new meeting between Iran and the group known as the P5+1, comprising the U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China.

Adopting the new measures carries a significant cost for Europe. The top European customers for Iranian oil are also those currently facing the most serious financial crises: Greece buys about one third of its oil imports from Iran, while Italy and Spain each rely on Tehran for a little over 10% of their own supply. Although Saudi Arabia and other suppliers are expected to fill any shortfall in available output, the International Energy Agency has warned that replacing Iranian oil will not be an easy task for Europe.

(MORE: Amid New Sanctions, Obama Confronts the Challenges of Diplomacy With Iran)

But the key question is the effect sanctions will have on Iran. Oil accounts for around 90% of all Iranian exports to the E.U., and European countries together make up Tehran's second largest market after China. More broadly, oil makes up over three-quarters of Iran's total economic output, and the country sells roughly 2.5 million barrels a day, with Europe accounting for about one quarter of it last year. Indeed, Iran is already suffering from the existing European and American sanctions: the Iranian rial has fallen about 40% against the dollar since December, inflation is at 40%, and youth unemployment is at around 50%.?

One way Iran may try to offset the impact of the European embargo is by selling more oil to China, India and other Asian countries, inducing them by offering major discounts -- a possibility made easier for Iran while the price remains above $100 per barrel. For that reason, Western powers hope to persuade Asian countries to reduce their own purchases from Iran.?

Yet all this effort may still fail to dissuade Iran from pursuing its nuclear ambitions. Sanctions are often a blunt political instrument: Even if they succeed in imposing significant costs on the regime and exacerbating public frustration over economic hardships, they could further entrench Tehran's regime and its intransigence. Says Paul Stevens, a Senior Research Fellow at the London-based Chatham House think tank,? "Given the crucial role of oil in Iran's deepest political DNA, the E.U. embargo would put the population solidly behind the current regime. It would greatly strengthen the Ahmadinejad regime at a time when it is under considerable pressure, especially with parliamentary elections looming in March."

(PHOTOS: Iranian Protesters Storm British Embassy)

The new sanctions come just as a US naval flotilla accompanied by British and French warships is patrolling the Strait of Hormuz, inevitably ratcheting up tensions. Two Iranian lawmakers on Monday responded to the E.U. decision by threatening to close the Strait, through which some 40% of the world's oil shipments pass en route to market. Despite the new sanctions, however, some analysts maintain Tehran is more likely to heed the threat of military action. European Council on Foreign Relations policy fellow Richard Gowan warns, "It's hard to believe that these sanctions will cause Iran to discard its nuclear ambitions. Iran will remain much more focused on decision-making in Israel and the U.S. over the possibility of a military strike this year."

E.U. officials accept that sanctions are no silver bullet. But coupled with robust diplomacy and a credible military presence in the region, they believe economic pressures can create diplomatic leverage. The problem for the West is what happens if Iran fails to buckle as sanctions reach their peak.?

J?rg Himmelreich, a senior fellow with the German Marshall Fund in Berlin says the measures can only buy time. "At best, sanctions might force a change of regime, but not the nuclear program, which reflects a widely-shared sense national pride and self-consciousness," he says. "It may be pessimistic, but I see the next step as accepting Iran as a nuclear power." If that is the way the Iran conundrum is heading, Europe's sanctions may simply be the last throw of the dice.

Mitt Romney's Tax Returns: Like Father, like Son? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The tax issue is something Mitt Romney has been accused of avoiding for quite some time. On Jan. 24, he finally revealed his returns. They confirmed what everyone already knew: Mitt Romney makes more than most people and is taxed at a lower rate.

The IRS explains that "tax rates that apply to net capital gain are generally lower than the tax rates that apply to other income. For 2010, the maximum capital gains rate for most people is 15 percent. " For Romney, that number was less than 14 percent; he paid $3 million on $21.7 million he received in mostly investment income.

His father was also a wealthy man, but he was more forthcoming than Mitt has been in providing his financial records while vying for the Republican nomination in 1968. George Romney, in what USA Today reports was a "move without precedent in American politics" at the time, voluntarily disclosed 12 years worth of records when he ran for president in 1968.

Unlike his son, the American Motors President was not accused of being a "vulture capitalist." He actually saved the company from bankruptcy and got millions through stock options. He did, however, lose the Republican nomination that year to Richard Nixon. Perhaps his loss is why Mitt Romney is only providing two years worth of tax returns.

An Associated Press examination of Romney's financial records identified at least six funds set up in the Cayman Islands totaling more than $32 million. A 2010 Congressional Research Report on tax havens revealed that "the annual cost of offshore tax abuses may be around $100 billion per year." The same report lists the Cayman Islands as one of the known tax havens. There is no indication that Romney's Cayman accounts are abusive of our tax system.

However, there are plenty of reasons to think he might not be able to relate to the average American who considers $374,000 quite a bit of money, who pays almost double what he pays in taxes and who isn't in favor of just letting the housing market bottom out. I can't, in good conscience, give my vote to someone who has no idea what it's like to actually have to value money, to someone who would squander ten grand on a bet. And I won't be voting for Romney.

We desperately need our economy to improve, and the only candidates who will get my vote are those who understand that money does matter. Yes, wealth can be measured through children, as Mrs. Romney points out. (It's assumed that she wasn't referring to tax credits.) However, children are like offshore accounts; if you run out of money to invest in them, they can dwindle away to nothing.

My biggest concern about Romney is that he's the multi-millionaire son of a millionaire, both of whom had interest in being the President of the United States. I worry that he can't relate to everyday Americans enough to make good decisions on behalf of the majority who aren't wealthy.

In these tumultuous economic times, we need someone whose greatest desire is to help turn things around for the majority who are struggling. I'm just not convinced that Romney is the man to make that happen.

Firm stops file sharing after Megaupload case (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? FileSonic, a website providing online data storage, has disabled its file sharing services following a U.S.-led crackdown on a rival website and amid heated debate over Washington's attempts to clamp down on online piracy.

Police in New Zealand and Europe have made a number of arrests in recent days related to an investigation led by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation of the Megaupload.com website.

The group have been accused of engaging in a scheme that took more than $500 million away from copyright holders and generated over $175 million in proceeds from subscriptions and advertising. Megaupload's lawyers have said the company simply offered online storage.

FileSonic, which describes itself as the "Unlimited Storage Company," said in a statement on its website that it would only allow users to access their own files.

"All sharing functionality of FileSonic is now disabled. Our service can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally."

The firm, which lists addresses in Britain and Hong Kong, did not immediately respond to an email sent requesting further comment on the move.

The Megaupload case is being heard as the debate over online piracy reaches fever pitch in Washington where Congress is trying to craft tougher legislation.

AUTOMOTIVE - AUTOS: Charity Hot-Rod Sale Benefits Children Of ...

What started out as a church project by a group of car-savvy volunteers came to fruition at Barrett-Jackson on Sunday when the 1932 Ford hot rod named Metal of Honor sold for $150,000 to benefit the children of slain and disabled military people.

Forty-three Medal of Honor recipients signed the trunk lid. (Photo: Bob Golfen) Besides being a handsome and well-built street machine, the most-significant feature of the roadster is on the trunk lid, where there are the signatures of 43 recipients of the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government.

?The car is incredible, but the car is just incidental to what it represents,? said Barrett-Jackson president Steve Davis as he introduced the high-boy roadster surrounded by some of the Medal of Honor winners and other military personnel.

To support the cause, the church group from Barrington, Ill., created the Ironmen Foundation to ?provide scholarships for the children of our slain and disabled soldiers.? Every penny of the $150,000 will be donated to the foundation, with Barrett-Jackson waiving all fees for its many charity sales.

One-hundred percent of the parts and equipment for the roadster project were donated by suppliers and speed shops, both local and national, and every man hour of the build were by the church volunteers along with guidance from local professionals.

The interior carries on the military theme, with aircraft seats and other features. (Photo: Bob Golfen) The main color is Olive Drab with hand-painted side graphics of digital camouflage. The interior is tan khaki and green with military aircraft seats. Inside the trunk are military ammo boxes and satchels.

?Motorhead Design House produced the Robert Horn-designed Medal of Honor emblems on the bullnose, wheel hubs, horn button and fabric inset,? the builders say in the vehicle description.

Before the sale, retired Army Lt. Col. Hal Fritz said that the car and the charity ?represent the sacrifice and dedication by a lot of men and women.?

?The Ironmen Foundation put this car together with love and with that thought in mind,? Fritz said. ?It?s dedicated to all of those who are serving today. Some of those will be killed in the course of their duty, which is why this is such an important cause.

?And why this car is so much more than just a piece of metal.?

IIF says creditors at limits of "voluntary" Greek deal (Reuters)

ATHENS/LONDON (Reuters) ? Private creditors said on Sunday they had come to the limits of what losses they could concede in a Greek debt swap, putting the ball in the court of the EU and the IMF in a tense race against the clock to avoid a messy default.

Athens needs a deal on the plan, meant to cut 100 billion euros (?129.3 billion) from its debt burden of over 350 billion, in coming days to stay afloat when a major debt redemption falls due in March.

Greece and its private creditors are converging towards an agreement that would see private creditors accepting a real loss of 65 to 70 percent, sources close to the talks said after several rounds of talks last week.

Athens and its creditors have broadly agreed that under the so-called PSI deal, the new bonds would likely feature 30-year maturity and a progressive interest rate averaging out at 4 percent, sources said.

But many details are still unresolved and the plan must also win approval from the IMF, EU paymaster Germany and the other euro zone countries, who insist the deal must put Greece's debt back on a sustainable track.

The offer conveyed to the Greek authorities "is the maximum consistent with a voluntary deal," a spokesman for the Institute of International Finance, which negotiates in the name of private creditors, said on Sunday.

The "voluntary" character of the debt restructuring is important for the euro zone to avoid triggering the pay-out of insurance against a Greek default.

Much of the attention will now turn to a meeting of euro zone finance ministers on Monday, and to whether EU states and the IMF consider that the plan that is being put together by Athens and private bondholders does enough to cut Greece's debt.

"It is a question, now, really of the broader reaction of the EU official sector and of course the IMF on this proposal," IIF chief Charles Dallara told Antenna TV on Sunday.

DETERIORATING PROSPECTS

The IMF insists any deal must ensure Greece's debt burden will be cut to 120 percent of GDP by 2020 from 160 percent now, as agreed at an EU summit in October. It has also warned that more efforts must be made by private bondholders or EU states to compensate for the fact that Athens' economic prospects have deteriorated since.

One banking source close to the talks said the IMF wanted the new bonds' coupon to be lower than the average 4 percent discussed by Athens and its banks.

"The IMF has been pressing for a lower coupon rate on the new bonds," the source said.

Dallara and special adviser Jean Lemierre left Athens on Saturday without finalizing the deal, with sources close to the talks saying many details had not been resolved yet, including legal aspects and how a sweetener promised to banks to facilitate the deal would be used.

"We are at a crossroads and I remain quite hopeful," Dallara said.

But he also told Greek newspaper Proto Thema that failure to reach a deal could have dire consequences.

"If there is not an agreement, then I think unfortunately it means a huge setback for Greece, for Europe and for the world economy," he said.

"If there is no agreement, there will most likely be default. This could put Greece's membership of the euro zone at risk," he said, adding that this could also affect the euro and undermine confidence in other sovereign papers in Europe.

Panetta: Military commits to Marine's F-35 fighter (AP)

PATUXENT RIVER NAVAL AIR STATION, Md. ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the U.S. military is committed to developing the Marine Corps version of the next-generation strike fighter jet, but warns the program is "not out of the woods yet."

Panetta says the Pentagon needs "to make sure we're on the cutting edge" of military technology. And he says the F-35, the Pentagon's most expensive weapons program, is absolutely vital to maintaining America's air superiority.

He spoke as he stood in front of one of the fighter aircraft at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland, where the program is run.

The Marine's version of the jet has faced schedule delays and cost overruns and the program was placed on probation by former defense chief Robert Gates. Panetta says the probation period is over.

Top Moments: Glee's Synchronized Proposals and Ryan Seacrest's Evil Twin (omg!)

Our top moments of the week:

15. Best Clean Slate: New year, new look for Walden (Ashton Kutcher). Though he's initially upset that Zoey wants him to shave and look presentable for a corporate shindig on Two and a Half Men, Walden finally gives in and does away with his hirsute hobo look. Later, however, Zoey comes over to apologize for forcing him to change and is stunned to see her clean-shaven and much younger-looking beau. You know Ashton couldn't have hidden the pretty for much longer.

14. Most Substantial Goodbye
: After Agent McQuaid and her friend Laura are killed on CSI, Willows comes under fire when a hit squad unleashes a flurry of bullets at her house. She manages to fire a few shots back before diving out of her house and into Russell's car. But she isn't exactly in the clear: She's been shot in the side. Willows still has one episode left before Marg Helgenberger bids adieu after 11 years, but that's how you (start to) go out with a bang.

13. Best New Birther Controversy: Everyone feted Betty White's birthday on her NBC special ? including President Barack Obama. The POTUS pens a letter to our favorite Golden Girl, but it seems to have an ulterior motive. "You look so fantastic and full of energy; I can't believe you're 90 years old," he writes. "In fact, I don't believe it. That's why I'm writing to ask if you will be willing to produce a copy of your long-form birth certificate. Thanks, and happy birthday, no matter how old you are." So, tell us, Mr. President, why don't you want to see Zooey Deschanel's birth certificate? (Fun fact: White, Deschanel and Michelle Obama have the same birthday.)

12. Weirdest Pregnancy Scare: On-again, off-again, on-again sisters Kim and Kyle Richards share a much-needed heart-to-heart when Kim confesses that she wants out of her destructive and controlling relationship on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. However, the always-unpredictable Kim throws her sister for a big loop when she says her period is late... by three months. Considering Kim is thin as a rail in the clip and is, no offense, 47 years old, it only makes sense when Kyle asks if it's menopause. Kim then, for some reason, takes her shoe off her foot and slams it against her hand while insisting to Kyle that she is going to have another baby. But then she tells the camera she'd prefer "a puppy or a kitty." Considering her erratic behavior all season, we think even a puppy or kitty is pushing it.

11. Most Unnecessary Return: On The Bachelor, Shawntel, the funeral director from last season, returns for a shot with Ben. He's shocked to see her naturally, but the other ladies mask their own surprise by getting predictably nasty, commenting on Shawntel's thick thighs (Erika) and calling her "Brad's dumpster trash" (Jaclyn). Ironically, they were both sent packing ? along with Shawntel. Now they all have something in common: They're all Ben's dumpster trash!

10. The First Rule of Fight Club Is You Don't Talk About Fight Club Award: On New Girl, Nick spends most of Schmidt's 29th birthday worrying that his new galpal Julia (guest star Lizzy Caplan) will think he and his friends are weirdos. She tries to tell him not to stress, but she really gets the point across when she waves her own freak flag and beats the crap out of one of Schmidt's obnoxious college friends, martial arts-style. She later reveals her anger-management issues to a slightly confused, slightly turned-on Nick. Something tells us their break-up is going to be really ugly.

9. Funniest Bleep: While preparing for her flower girl duties on Modern Family, Lily drops the F-bomb (for the record, child actor Aubrey Anderson-Emmons said "fudge" during the filming), which causes Cam to dissolve into a fit of giggles (children cursing and old people rapping are his weaknesses). He and Mitch decide to put her on verbal lockdown for the wedding, but when Cam starts crying during the spectacularly garish ceremony, Lily knows exactly what to say to cheer her dad up. Cue laughter from the entire church. One group that's not laughing? The No Cussing Cub. But hey, a child discovering profanity is every parent's rite of passage, so why the face?

8. Best and Worst Save:
The Kalinda Redemption Tour continues on The Good Wife when our favorite private investigator is faced with either protecting evidence that could destroy Will in the State's Attorney office's investigation or saving Alicia from getting disbarred over a forged legal document. Despite her longtime friendship with Will, Kalinda once again goes out of her way to protect Alicia and hands over the damning evidence against Will to prosecutor Dana Lodge. Sorry, Will, when it comes to getting in the way of a Kalinda-Alicia reconciliation, you never stood a chance.

7. Old Habits Die Hard Award: When Brad is offended that Jane claims to have changed him to suit her on Happy Endings, he reverts to Old Brad ? his sweats-wearing, turkey dog-eating, Sugar Ray-listening college persona who created Blackass, a black version of Jackass. And to really stick it to Jane, Old Brad and his Blackass crew ? including a black Wee Man ? perform a stunt in his condo: the Snack Pack Mousetrap Front Flip, which consists of jumping off a trampoline and landing on containers of pudding that are surrounded by mousetraps. Old Brad nails it... until he slips when Jane catches him and hysterically gets devoured by the traps. So how long will it take for Blackass to actually happen?

6. Best Renewed Commitment: Emily initially says yes when Daniel asks her to marry him on Revenge, but she has second thoughts about her master plan of vengeance against the Graysons when that other guy she likes ? Jack ? is injured in a related attack. Just when she's about to hand back the ring and tell Daniel she needs more time, Daniel reveals that Charlotte is David Clarke's daughter because David forced himself on Victoria. Knowing the truth, that Victoria was in love with David, she suddenly asks Daniel how a June wedding sounds. "You still want to marry into my crazy family?" "More than ever," she replies. Wedding, er, game on!

5. Penis Joke of the Week Award: We weren't the only ones at a loss when Wikipedia went dark in protest of SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act). Jon Stewart couldn't look up what SOPA even is! "What do they expect us to do?" Stewart cries. "Go to the library? Like a common masturbator?" The Daily Show host then points out that SOPA wouldn't remove sites altogether, but just block people from accessing them. "It's sort of like coming up with a plan to prevent teen pregnancy that includes filling penises with cement," Stewart quips. And that is the best penis joke we've heard all week.

4. Best Reveal: Alcatraz set up many mysteries in its two-hour series premiere, namely how more than 300 guards and prisoners vanished into thin air in 1963 only to reappear in present day without having aged a day. However, the series saved the most intriguing bit of information for last ? revealing in the end that that Dr. Lucy Banerjee, who has been working with former Alcatraz guard Emerson Hauser to recover the missing '63s, is actually one of them as a result of having been in the prison on the day of the disappearances. Thank goodness this only took two hours to uncover, as opposed to six seasons.

3. No One Is Safe Award: Two days after ripping Hollywood a new one hosting the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais certainly isn't going to let David Letterman off scot-free. When Letterman asks if he, Gervais and Gervais' frequent collaborator Stephen Merchant could all sit down for a meal some time, Letterman tries to make a joke about eating "that tasteless white fish" famous across the pond. Instead of helping him out, Gervais lets Letterman stammer for a few minutes and then motions to the cameraman to cut the footage. "You can cut all this out, can't you," he asks out loud before pondering how much worse Letterman is going to get in a few years. Letterman finally remembers the name, Dover Sole, but it's way too late to get Gervais to back down. "What, Granddad? Dover sole?!" That sound was Dave completely losing his appetite.

2. Worst Doppelganger: We used to think there was no one more insufferable than Ryan Seacrest, until the Season 11 premiere of American Idol introduces us to contestant Shaun Kraisman. Kaisman walks, talks, dresses and acts exactly like the Idol host, only he is 100 times cheesier (if you can believe that!). Fortunately, Kraisman's singing chops don't measure up, so he is homeward- rather than Hollywood-bound. Seacrest wannabe... out!

1. Most Indecent Proposals: Glee's boundary-less educator Will Schuester decides it's a good idea to recruit his students ? who he creepily calls "his family" -- to find a suitable song to accompany his ultimately successful marriage proposal to Emma. He settles on Rihanna's "Who Found Love?" but who even remembers that? Music takes a backseat to a crowded poolside spectacle that includes a Busby Berkeley-style synchronized-swimming number, Artie diving headfirst into a pool (eek), Rachel and Santana in full-on Ethel Merman garb and a white suit-wearing Mr. Schu walking on water. Those kids must be exhausted! (Bonus proposal: A dazed and confused Finn, who finally learns how his dad really died, pops the question to a stunned Rachel. Dramatic fade to black. No added production value needed.)

Israeli club paying price for racist fans

By ARON HELLER

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:21 p.m. ET Jan. 19, 2012

JERUSALEM (AP) -Throughout its history, the Beitar Jerusalem football club has won 13 trophies, counted prime ministers among its fans and played in numerous European competitions. One thing the club has yet to do: Include an Arab player on its roster.

As the only major Israeli team never to integrate, Beitar Jerusalem is now under heavy pressure - particularly after a series of run-ins with local football authorities over racist behavior by its fans.

That may not be easy. Club management says its hands are tied by a hardcore base of fans who wield significant clout over personnel decisions. It has even called on police to rein in the worst offenders - an infamous group known as "La Familia."

"We are against racism and against violence and we pay a price for our fans," said Assaf Shaked, a team spokesman. "But we aren't going to bring an Arab player just to annoy the fans."

Beitar - which has won six league championships and seven cup titles in its 76-year history - has historically been strongly aligned with Israel's nationalist right wing. Its name, Beitar, comes from the Zionist youth movement that is linked to the ruling Likud Party. For decades, the team, like the Beitar movement, viewed itself as a perennial outsider while the establishment was controlled by the dovish Labor party and its offshoot in the sports world - the various Hapoel, or "workers," teams.

In 1976, Beitar finally won its first cup championship, and the following year Likud rose to power for the first time, ushering in a sea change in Israeli politics and sports. The team and its fans have since been a steady source of support for Likud politics.

A string of politicians have served as team chairman. Prime ministers with Likud roots - from Ariel Sharon to Ehud Olmert to Benjamin Netanyahu - have called themselves fans and made pilgrimages to the club's Teddy Stadium.

Beitar's fans are notoriously - and proudly - abusive toward opposing players, and routinely taunt them with racist and anti-Arab chants.

The Israeli Football Association says it has had enough. It recently ordered Beitar to play before an empty stadium and docked it two points in the standings after fans made monkey noises toward Hapoel Tel Aviv's Nigerian-born striker Toto Tamuz, a former Beitar player and fan favorite.

"Give Toto a banana!" they shouted.

League spokesman Amir Ephrat said the Beitar fans have pushed things too far, and the team has to take a tougher stand.

"This kind of extremism has to be dealt with before it expands," he said. "It has to be quashed when it is still small, because when it gets bigger it becomes a lot harder to stop."

Beitar's history of shunning Arab players has become especially noticeable in recent seasons. Arabs, who make up about 20 percent of Israel's population, now star on the Israeli national team and on every first division team besides Beitar. This year, the league's top two goal scorers are Arabs.

The league's battle with Beitar - and the team's own struggle with its rogue fans - comes as world football is cracking down on racism.

Earlier this month, a British parliamentary committee announced it would investigate racism in sports following a number of high-profile cases. Racism cases involving players and fans are being dealt with in France, Bulgaria and Spain as well.

As the Likud party has become more mainstream after years in government, the Beitar team's die-hard fans have gone the other direction.

In 2005, the "La Familia" organization was created, and it quickly became the team's loudest and most visible supporters. The fans routinely wave huge flags of the outlawed racist Kach party, whoop like monkeys when opposing black players touch the ball and chant "death to Arabs" and other racist slogans toward Arab players.

The club has been penalized numerous times for the behavior of its fans, which has included booing during a moment of silence for slain Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, singing songs deriding the Prophet Muhammad and physically assaulting Arab maintenance workers in stadiums.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police were responsible for security outside the stadiums and for enforcing general public order - not fan behavior.

For years, the club's Russian-Israeli owner Arkady Gaydamak refrained from intervening. In fact, he backed the group financially and glowed in their adoration. After a failed attempt to run for Jerusalem mayor, Gaydamak fled the country in 2008 amid financial scandals in Israel and Europe.

Since then, Gaydamak has drastically cut funding to the team and tried to sell it.

First it was Brazilian-American millionaire Guma Aguiar who stepped in with a $4 million investment - before he checked himself into a psychiatric hospital because of increasingly erratic behavior that included plans to rebuild the biblical Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.

Last year, a pair of American businessmen agreed to buy the club - only to back out at the last moment. The team finished the season in 11th place in the 16-team league, narrowly avoiding relegation to the second division. This year, Beitar Jerusalem has fallen even further and is currently in danger of relegation.

In this environment, the fans' anger has grown. It is now no longer aimed solely toward Arabs - but against team management as well.

Most of the ire is directed toward general manager Itzik Kornfein, a former Beitar goalkeeping legend who has spoken out against racism. Fans often curse at him outside team practices. Some have even attempted to attack him physically.

Shlomi Barzel, the sports editor of Haaretz and a lifelong Beitar fan, said the radicalization of the fans reflects the weakness of team management.

"'La Familia' is a small, extreme group that numbers no more than a few hundred. The real problem is what happened to the quiet majority? There is no one countering them and the team is too weak to do anything about it," he said.

Barzel said that at the height of Gaydamak's popularity the owner tried to sign an Arab player, only to be overwhelmed by the fans' opposition.

"If he couldn't do it, no one can," he said.

The Beitar policy of shunning Arab players resurfaced last month when Maccabi Haifa striker Mohammed Ghadir said he would be willing to transfer to Beitar. Even before Beitar fans had their say, Ghadir withdrew the suggestion after Arab fans accused him of being a traitor.

"We would love to bring an Arab player on board but the conditions are not yet ripe - not as far as a player is concerned and not as far as the fans are concerned," said Shaked, the team spokesman.

He said fans need to go through "a learning process" before an Arab player could be added. He appears to be correct.

"Beitar is a team of Jews. Just like the army won't bring in a Chinese soldier, Beitar won't bring in an Arab player, because when there is a war and you have to give your all, they will run," said Shahar Darly, an-18-year-old fan. "We represent Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, the state of the Jews, not the Arabs ... if they try to bring an Arab player, we won't let them."

Cash-strapped Ireland tests limits of austerity (AP)

DUBLIN ? Ireland is testing the limits for how much European Union-ordered austerity one country can take. Its four-year struggle to save its banks and tame a runaway deficit has already meant slashing thousands from the annual budgets of most households ? and many Irish say they're close to breaking point.

"We're squeezed to the pips," said Tommy Larkin, a 35-year-old mechanic changing tires and oil on the double in northside Dublin. "I never had to watch my money in the good times, but that's all I do with my money now."

Across the road, butcher Sean Smith, 43, isn't quite as forlorn about his own family finances but is just as bleak about Ireland's financial future.

"We're under German rule, it's as simple as that, and we'll be paying them back forever," Smith said, referring to Ireland's loss of economic sovereignty since taking a bailout from the EU and International Monetary Fund 14 months ago.

On Thursday, EU and IMF chiefs monitoring Ireland's handling of its debt crisis left Dublin singing the praises of a government that has slashed its 2011 deficit to below 10 percent of GDP, ahead of the bailout plan's target.

Ireland has been cutting its budgets and raising a slew of taxes since January 2009 and, according to the EU-IMF bailout plan, still must cut billions more over the next three years just to regain a 2015 deficit of 3 percent of GDP, the maximum level permitted in the eurozone.

Middle-class wages have been cut around 15 percent, while the nearly 15 percent unemployed have seen welfare and other aid payments trimmed. The government has just raised sales tax to 23 percent, joint highest in the EU, imposing a new household tax, and planning new water charges next. Keeping a car on the road can mean an annual fee of anything from euro160 ($205) to euro2,258 ($3,045), while recent fuel-tax hikes have helped take gas above euro1.50 per liter ($7.25 per U.S. gallon).

Many economists believe Ireland is trying to defy economic gravity by fighting a war on its own debt that, to succeed, will require strong economic growth alongside spending cuts. Austerity alone, the recipe so far, undercuts the hopes of growth by sucking money out of the economy.

The same formula of reforms centered on austerity is being applied across Europe and is championed by Germany's chancellor and leading voice in Europe's financial planning, Angela Merkel, as a way out of the region's financial crisis. Recession-hit Greece and Portugal, which have also been the recipients of bailouts, face severe austerity measures.

The proponents of austerity have pointed to Ireland as proof that it can work, but questions are growing over how much longer the country can keep squeezing money from its economy.

"If austerity don't work in Ireland, it won't work anywhere. And it can't work here if people are scared stiff of spending whatever money they have," said David McWilliams, Ireland's most prominent economic commentator, who foresaw the demise of the 1994-2007 Celtic Tiger economy as credit and property bubbles collapsed.

McWilliams noted that Ireland has an extremely flexible labor market by European standards, is quick to use its traditional safety valve of emigration to keep unemployment artificially low, and has built a lopsided economy dependent on the fortunes of nearly 1,000 foreign multinationals based here.

Despite these advantages, he said, Ireland still stands little chance of achieving the economic growth it needs so long as it's trapped in an EU-directed plan that takes progressively more money out of people's pockets.

"Search every economic textbook you've ever read and find the one that says cutting expenditure in the teeth of a recession will make the economy grow. It doesn't exist," McWilliams said.

"The problem with our austerity budgets is that we're trying to hit a moving target, and every cut and tax hike moves the target further away. I don't see how these austerity budgets ever end," he said.

Ireland's most recent consumer confidence survey last month recorded a precipitous drop as citizens reflected worries about their declining net pay and job security, mortgages in negative equity, and tougher times expected to come.

Austin Hughes, chief economist at KBC Ireland, a Belgian-owned bank that is one of Ireland's main mortgage providers, said the country faces a make-or-break 2012. If the economy doesn't grow sufficiently, he said, people will increasingly reject the whole rationale of austerity.

"Ireland started battling its downturn in 2008 before virtually the rest of the world. As we face into 2012, we're battling this sense of dread, that this fight against debt could go on forever. The risk is it's going to tax people's willingness to make further adjustments," said Hughes, who co-authored the consumer confidence report.

"People rightfully wonder: How bad will property taxes get? How much higher will the other charges go? How bad will the cuts in public services be? We've been living with too much certainty for too long," he said.

"With each austerity budget the government extends this sense of hope that we're coming to the corner, that the worst is over and things are about to get better. And at each stage that hope gets snatched away."

Ireland's exceptional exposure to the economic fortunes of its two major trading partners, the U.S. and the United Kingdom, appears to be the key to pulling Ireland out of its doldrums ? or its Achilles heel, if those two economies don't generate their own growth.

Multinationals in Ireland, chiefly American companies attracted by an unusually low 12.5 percent rate of corporate tax, generate more than 18 percent of Ireland's entire GDP.

The trouble is, those companies making goods for sale overseas provide just 7 percent of Ireland's jobs, according to estimates by McWilliams. So even as these companies' exports boost GDP, their actual economic footprint on the ground in Ireland is far less.

"When Ireland's GDP rises, it doesn't mean anything to the real people of Ireland. It means Pfizer pumped out more Viagra last month," McWilliams said, referring to one of Ireland's most high-profile U.S. drug companies and exports. "And frankly, the level of erectile dysfunction in North America is hardly a firm basis for growth in Ireland."

Perhaps the most striking aspect of Ireland's economic fall has been the relatively low levels of public protest.

Commentators credit Ireland's post-Famine experience of poverty and emigration, its tradition of close government-labor union relations, and its exceptionally high levels of property ownership as disparate reasons why the country's shrinking work force keeps reporting to their jobs.

Smith, the Dublin butcher, and Larkin the mechanic are both bracing in their own ways for a tougher 2012. Both imagine an alternative Ireland where enraged workers riot in the streets, but both doubt it will happen.

Larkin is living paycheck to paycheck with nothing left over for savings. His partner takes care of their 3-year-old child at home, and another baby's on the way in March. The home they bought in 2006 with a euro270,000 ($350,000) mortgage is worth less than half of that now.

The auto shop has had to lower prices to keep penny-pinching customers coming in. Its newest competition includes shops that sell imported, used German tires ? too worn down for German roads, but still legal in Ireland ? for half the price of new ones.

One of his friends has just given up on Ireland and joined the 1,700 on average who leave the country each week. Part of him would love to join his friend overseas.

"If I had nothing tying me down, no mortgage, I'd be on that plane to Australia as well," Larkin said.
