Well, everyone, that's it for our 2012 Oscars coverage. It's been a great awards season. Can't wait to see you next year. ... ... ... Hello, everyone, and welcome to MTV News' 2013 Oscars coverage. It seems like just yesterday that "The Artist" won big and took home Best Picture, but who cares about that movie anymore? That's old news.

This year is sure to be a huge year at the movies, and the nominees for next year's Oscars are already lining up. MTV News has your first look at the likely nominees for the Academy Awards based on everything we know about the Oscars.

Best Supporting Actor
A rare, wide-open race this late in the game, Best Supporting Actor nominations could go to any number of great actors who were not great enough to be considered for the lead. The one lock at this point has to be Christoph Waltz for his work in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained." Waltz won an Academy Award for playing essentially the same character in "Inglourious Basterds," but this time he's a good guy. What could be bad about that?

Best Actress
Here's a category already locked in a dead heat, with a wide variety of potential nominees vying for one of the five spots. The real shock here could be young Quvenzhané Wallis in "Beasts of the Southern Wild," who won over audiences at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and the Academy will jump at any opportunity to honor a child actor. Other potential nominees include Sandra Bullock in "Gravity," a largely solo performance from a previous winner, and Keira Knightley in "Anna Karenina" because it's Keira Knightley in a Joe Wright-directed costume drama. Also, either Charlize Theron or Noomi Rapace could earn nominations for "Prometheus," depending on whose face doesn't get eaten first.

Best Actor
For Best Actor, expect to see a lot of familiar faces and perhaps one familiar face that actually belongs to someone else. I'm speaking, of course, about Joseph Gordon-Levitt in "Looper." It's unclear whether JGL will be in a more supporting role, but early reports peg his prosthetic-enhanced performance as a young Bruce Willis as a career-best. Also, the Academy loves an actor in makeup. You might see the rest of the category filled out with award favorites because they're award favorites, like Daniel Day-Lewis ("Lincoln"), Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Master"), Brad Pitt ("Cogan's Trade"), and a second nomination for John Hawkes ("The Surrogate").

Best Picture
The 2013 Best Picture category should shake out like filling out the cast of a heist movie. Everyone has a unique role to play. You have the musical ("Les Miserable") and the obligatory Tolkien nominee ("The Hobbit"). There's the populist Ben Affleck film ("Argo") and the critic-loved Ben Affleck film ("Untitled Terrence Malick Project'). Plus, you need a current affairs film ("Untitled International Thriller," formerly known as "Kill Bin Laden") and a movie everyone loved but will never win ("The Dark Knight Rises"). Arctic micro-organisms may hold key to dealing with oil spills in the North

Marcel Babin, Canada Excellence Research Chair in Remote Sensing of Canada's New Arctic Frontier at the Universite Laval, will be discussing his research on the effects of environmental changes in the Arctic as part of an upcoming press breakfast panel discussion.

The February 17 Canada Press Breakfast on the Arctic and oceans will be part of the 178th annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, to be held in Vancouver, and will feature a variety of prominent researchers.

Babin's research focusing on Arctic micro-organisms may soon allow researchers to have the information they need to accurately predict the environmental impacts of events from oil spills to climate change while other changes are also happening.

For example, Babin is uncovering how melting sea ice may be leading to an increase in the amount of algae in Arctic waters. By the end of this year, Babin's models will have produced initial results that can predict algae production in the Arctic over the next decade.

"Light is necessary for algae to grow. Less sea ice means more light, which means more algae if there are enough nutrients to support increased production," he says. "As the algae are at the basis of the trophic [food] chain, we expect that all these changes will modify the structure of whole communities in marine environments."

Babin and his research team are using the most recent advances in satellite remote sensing to develop new ways to monitor environmental changes such as these in the Arctic, as well as to create advanced computer models of Arctic ecosystems, and to design powerful new tools to archive and analyze the vast stream of research data he is creating about the North. Key to the team's research is the phytoplankton that lives in the Arctic.

"Phytoplankton fuels the whole trophic chain," he says. "So the experiments we are doing in the lab and at sea are designed to determine how it-and a number of other key organisms-respond to environmental factors such as temperature, light and nutrients."

In the lab, Babin's experiments simulate the environment experienced by these organisms in Arctic waters. He grows phytoplankton in a bioreactor and then changes levels of nutrients, light and temperature, observing what happens and how their physiological properties change.

Based on these experiments, Babin develops mathematical models that are then embedded in physical, biological models of the ocean. These models can then be used to predict the fate of marine ecosystems under various climate change scenarios.

"We are currently looking at variations in the production of marine algae over the past decade and observing the impact on that production of receding ice cover and the increase in cloud cover in the Arctic," he says. "We found that receding sea ice had a positive effect on primary production, as it allows more light to penetrate the ocean. It seems there are enough nutrients to support additional production of phytoplankton."

However, Babin has also observed that the increased cloudiness that has happened at the same time is slowing the increase caused by receding ice, as it reduces the amount of incident light.

"Overall, there is now more light available for phytoplankton, and the production of algal biomass is now greater than before," he says. "Now we wonder what the impact will be on the whole trophic chain."

Changes in the community structure of phytoplankton have recently been observed in the Arctic Ocean, and blooms are occurring earlier in the spring. This is an important change, since it shifts when in the season production is highest, and when the entire food chain is set.

Babin sees another vital impact of understanding these changes-one that might have wide-reaching consequences. The knowledge will help predict what will happen if, for example, there is an environmental accident in the Arctic.

"If someone asks me what the impact of an oil spill in the Arctic will be, the only way I can give an accurate answer is by knowing and understanding how these systems work," he says. "We know only very partially at the moment. Part of this research will make us ready to answer that question."

Babin will discuss his research and answer questions from the press as part of the Canada Press Breakfast on the Arctic and oceans, being held at the 178th annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The breakfast will be held in Room 306 of the Vancouver Convention Centre at 8 a.m. on February 17, 2012, and will feature Canadian research experts from across natural sciences, engineering, health, social sciences and humanities.

But without going into a digression about how I love collecting words and being an obnoxious little know-it-all, let?s just say that I also find words quite funny. However, before the funny, I first have a couple of other things things to say.

Firstly, sorry for being MIA. University started again a couple of weeks ago and I?ve been spinning around like a crazy elf. (Kudos if you pick up the reference!) Everybody seems to think it is my goal in life to read a score of boring articles a week. Well, maybe not a score. But a lot. I was going to make a vlog again, but halfway through recording I noticed that the mic was not picking up my voice properly and I was basically inaudible. I didn?t feel like dubbing it, so you will just have to make do with my bland text.

I?m not sure what this means for the blog and how often I will have time to post. Perhaps I will start doing smaller posts, with only one or two frames. But I am definitely going to continue blogging! Unfortunately I am enjoying this far too much to stop! Anyway, just be aware of this in case I go missing for 3 weeks!
Oh, and before someone asks, our academic year does run along with the calendar year.

Early last week, the European Commission gave Google its blessing regarding the purchase of Motorola Mobility. But the honeymoon has been anything but relaxing for the search giant and its latest power-play acquisition, after Apple filed an antitrust complaint, claiming a breach of the company's FRAND obligations. Now Microsoft is waiving the antitrust flag as well, claiming that the company is reportedly abusing its standard-essential patents, impeding fair access to patents that are fundamental to regular device function -- this time dealing with video streaming and wireless connectivity. Microsoft Deputy General Counsel Dave Heiner has posted an appeal to the company's TechNet blog, outlining the issue and explaining that "Motorola is attempting to block sales of Windows PCs, our Xbox game console and other products," further claiming that "Motorola is on a path to use standard essential patents to kill video on the Web, and Google as its new owner doesn't seem to be willing to change course." The key issue at hand is patent pricing -- Microsoft claims that Motorola is demanding an impossibly high royalty of $22.50 for a $1,000 laptop, and that only covers fees for H.264 licensing. It's no secret that Motorola's patent portfolio was a key component of Google's acquisition, and so far it doesn't appear that the company is making any suggestion that Motorola ease up on licensing fees. Dr. William Lamers Jr., a champion of modern hospice care, dies at ...

LOS ANGELES ? ?I?m not sick; I?m only dying,? a friend told Dr. William Lamers Jr. The man had inoperable cancer and wanted to go home to die, but his doctor wouldn?t let him out of the hospital.

It was the early 1970s, when most people with incurable illnesses died in a hospital, in a lonely room, attended by doctors and nurses with no specialized knowledge of the dying patient?s emotional and physical needs. There was no system for caring for the dying at home.

The experience opened Lamers? eyes to a major failing of the health care system.

In 1974 Lamers, a psychiatrist, helped start one of the first hospice programs in the United States, Hospice of Marin in Northern California. It helped terminally ill patients spend their last days at home, surrounded by family and supported by health workers and volunteers trained in end-of-life care.

Considered one of the founders of the modern hospice movement in the United States, Lamers died Feb. 2 in Malibu of an infection, his family said. He was 80.

The approach he championed spread across the country. There are now more than 5,000 hospice programs in the U.S., according to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Unlike in England, where the modern hospice movement began, the majority of U.S. hospices provide care in patients? homes rather than in a separate facility.

?In many ways the growth of hospice in this country is a direct result of Bill Lamers? work and the model he created,? said Ken Doka, senior consultant to the Hospice Foundation of America. Lamers ?really moved the notion of hospice from a facility to one?s home.?

When his friend with cancer was dying, Lamers was unfamiliar with the word ?hospice? but knew from his psychiatry practice that providing a ?good? death was crucial ? not only to the patient but also to the survivors. He once estimated that at least one-third of his patients had issues that stemmed from unresolved grief.

At first he considered opening a counseling center to help people deal with loss. His focus changed after he met Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, the Swiss-born psychiatrist whose 1969 bestseller ?On Death and Dying? lifted the taboo in the medical community on discussions of dying. She encouraged Lamers to start a hospice and introduced him to the work of Cicely Saunders, who in 1968 had establis hed the first modern hospice, St. Christopher?s in London.

Saunders? concept was to provide home-like comforts for the dying in a facility devoted to their care. Although impressed with Saunders? pioneering efforts, Lamers didn?t want to raise money for a building. He thought there was no better home-like environment ?than one?s own home,? Doka said.

With Rev. John Thornton, an Episcopal priest, and social worker Barbara Hill, Lamers started Hospice of Marin out of his house in San Rafael. Now called Hospice by the Bay, it serves four Northern California counties.

One of Lamers? earliest cases was a woman from the Midwest with terminal cancer who was new in town and had no friends or family. She wanted to die at home with her dog. Lamers and the hospice staff asked her neighbors to help her and promised to show them how.

?They gave her beautiful care, as good as she could have received in our best hospitals,? Lamers told the Marin Independent Journal in 1979. ?When she died, all the people who had helped gathered together. They weren?t strangers anymore; they were like a family. And they said ? when can we do something like this again??

?What Bill was really interested in was building community,? said Sandol Stoddard, author of ?The Hospice Movement? (1978), who observed Lamers? early efforts in Marin. ?He was a joyous person who loved people and loved his work.?

His spirit was not his only bountiful feature. Thornton recalled a time someone mistook part of Lamers? ample physique for a backpack: Lamers, clad in snow gear, said, ?That?s not a backpack, that?s me!?

Born in Milwaukee on Christmas Eve in 1931, Lamers graduated from Marquette University School of Medicine in 1958. After an internship in San Francisco, he completed his residency in general psychiatry and a National Institute of Mental Health fellowship in child psychiatry in Cincinnati.

In the mid-1960s, after serving in the Navy, he moved to Kentfield in Marin County, where he opened a private practice in child and family psychiatry.

He was believed to be one of the first physicians to prescribe lithium to treat bipolar disease. He was also an early advocate of oral morphine to manage chronically severe pain, according to Stephen R. Connor of the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance.

Lamers served as Hospice of Marin?s president until 1976 and medical director until 1981. He later was the medical director at hospices in Los Angeles and Calabasas. He also trained scores of hospice managers and was chairman of a national hospice accreditation panel.

In the course of his work, he witnessed hundreds of deaths over the decades. One case he often mentioned was that of a boy with bone cancer whose mother asked him on his final morning what he wanted for breakfast. The boy replied, ?A kiss.?

?You can?t top that,? Lamers had recalled.

Lamers is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; a daughter, Jennifer; two sons, William III and Mark; stepdaughters Sabrina De Fillipis, and Monique Sofen; two brothers and seven grandchildren.

He died at home under hospice care, with family and friends by his side.

Radiation detected 400 miles off Japan coast

SALT LAKE CITY?? Radioactive contamination from the Fukushima power plant disaster has been detected as far as almost 400 miles off Japan in the Pacific Ocean, with water showing readings of up to 1,000 times more than prior levels, scientists reported Tuesday.

But those results for the substance cesium-137 are far below the levels that are generally considered harmful, either to marine animals or people who eat seafood, said Ken Buesseler of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

He spoke Tuesday in Salt Lake City at the annual Ocean Sciences Meeting, attended by more than 4,000 researchers this week.

The results are for water samples taken in June, about three months after the power plant disaster, Buesseler said. In addition to thousands of water samples, researchers also sampled fish and plankton and found cesium-137 levels well below the legal health limit.

"We're not over the hump" yet in terms of radioactive contamination of the ocean because of continued leakage from the plant, Buesseler said in an interview before Tuesday's talk. He was chief scientist for the cruise that collected the data.

The ship sampled water from about 20 miles to about 400 miles off the coast east of the Fukushima plant. Concentrations of cesium-137 throughout that range were 10 to 1,000 times normal, but they were about one-tenth the levels generally considered harmful, Buesseler said.

Cesium-137 wasn't the only radioactive substance released from the plant, but it's of particular concern because of its long persistence in the environment. Its half-life is 30 years.

The highest readings last June were not always from locations closest to the Fukushima plant, Buesseler said. That's because swirling ocean currents formed concentrations of the material, he said.

Most of the cesium-137 detected during the voyage probably entered the ocean from water discharges, rather than atmospheric fallout, he added.

Hartmut Nies, of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said Buesseler's findings were not surprising, given the vastness of the ocean and its ability to absorb and dilute materials.

"This is what we predicted," Nies said after Buesseler presented his research.

Nies said the water's cesium-137 concentration has been so diluted that just 20 miles offshore, "if it was not seawater, you could drink it without any problems."

"This is good news," he said, adding that scientists expect levels to continue to decrease over time.

"We still don't have a full picture," Nies said, "but we can expect the situation will not become worse."

While the recently-separated Seal and Heidi Klum originally hoped to reconcile, a reunion might not be in their future after all, according to those close to the couple.

"They had both been wearing their wedding rings and had mutually thought they might be able to work it out," one source says of the pair, who got married in '05.

There have been reports that Seal pushed Heidi Klum in a pre-divorce fight, but the pair has not elaborated on the reasons for their surprising breakup.
