University investigating Colorado shooting suspect's deliveries

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? The University of Colorado said it's investigating whether shooting suspect James Holmes used his position as a graduate student to order materials in the potentially deadly booby traps that police said they found in his apartment.

Holmes, 24, received deliveries over four months to his home and school, authorities said Saturday. University spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery said Sunday the school is looking into those packages received at the school.

That detail emerged with other information on the suspect described as a budding scientist, brimming with potential, who pursued a graduate program even as he planned the attack with "calculation and deliberation," police said Saturday.

Investigators spent hours Saturday removing explosive materials from inside Holmes' apartment a day after police said he opened fire and set off gas canisters in a theater minutes into a premiere of the "The Dark Knight Rises." The massacre left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

His apartment was rigged with jars of liquids, explosives and chemicals that were booby trapped to kill "whoever entered it," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said, noting it would have likely been one of his officers.

"What we're seeing here is evidence of some calculation and deliberation," Oates added.

Inside the apartment, FBI Special agent James Yacone said bomb technicians neutralized what he called a "hypergolic mixture" and an improvised explosive device containing an unknown substance. There also were multiple containers of accelerants.

"It was an extremely dangerous environment," Yacone said at a news conference, noting that anyone who walked in would have sustained "significant injuries" or been killed.

By late Saturday afternoon, all hazards had been removed from the Holmes' apartment and residents in surrounding buildings were allowed to return home, police said.

The exception was Holmes' apartment building, where authorities were still collecting evidence. Inside the apartment, authorities covered the windows with black plastic to prevent onlookers from seeing in. Before they did, a man in an ATF T-shirt could be seen measuring a poster on a closet that advertised a DVD called "Soldiers of Misfortune." The poster showed several figures in various positions playing paintball, some wearing masks.

About 8 p.m. Saturday, police left the apartment building carrying a laptop computer and a hard drive.

While authorities continued to refuse to discuss a possible motive for one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history, details about Holmes' background as a student and would-be scientist trickled out.

Holmes had recently withdrawn from the competitive graduate program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado Denver, where he was one of six students at the school to get National Institutes of Health grant money. He recently took an intense three-part, oral exam that marks the end of the first year of the four-year program there, but university officials would not say if he passed, citing privacy concerns. The university said Holmes gave no reason for his withdrawal, a decision he made in June.

"The focus of the program is on training outstanding neuroscientists and academicians who will make significant contributions to neurobiology," the university said. The doctoral program usually takes five to seven years to complete, it said.

In a resume posted on Monster.com, Holmes listed himself as an "aspiring scientist" and said he was looking for a job as a laboratory technician.

The resume, first obtained in Holmes' home state of California by The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, paints a picture of a brilliant young man brimming with potential: He worked as a summer intern at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla in 2006 and mapped the neurons of Zebra finches and studied the flight muscles of hummingbirds while an undergraduate at the University of California, Riverside.

He also worked as a cabin counselor to underprivileged children at a summer camp in Los Angeles in 2008. In a statement, Camp Max Straus confirmed Holmes had worked there for eight weeks. The camp provided no other detail about Holmes but said such counselors are generally responsible for the care and guidance of roughly 10 children.

Neighbors and former classmates in California said although Holmes was whip-smart, he was a loner who said little and was easily forgotten ? until this week.

Mary Muscari, a criminology professor at Regis University in Denver who studies mass killings, said she was not surprised Holmes was studying neuroscience and mental disorders.

"It could be he was interested in that because he knows there's something different in him," she said.

Holmes was in solitary confinement for his protection at a Denver-area county detention facility, held without bond on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder. He was set for an initial hearing on Monday and has been appointed a public defender.

Among the deceased victims was a 6-year-old girl and a man who died on his 27th birthday and a day before his wedding anniversary. Families grieved and waited at hospitals, which reported at least seven still in critical condition Saturday and others with injuries that likely are permanent.

Veronica Moser-Sullivan, 6, had gone to the movies with her mother, who was drifting in and out of consciousness in a hospital intensive care unit, bullets lodged in her throat and a gunshot wound to her abdomen.

"Nobody can tell her about it," Annie Dalton said of her niece, Ashley Moser. "She is in critical condition, but all she's asking about is her daughter."

Veronica had just started swimming lessons on Tuesday, Dalton said.

"She was excited about life as she should be. She's a 6-year-old girl," her great aunt said.

Another victim, 27-year-old Matt McQuinn, was killed after diving in front of his girlfriend and her older brother to shield them from the gunfire, said his family's attorney, Rob Scott of Dayton, Ohio.

Alex Sullivan had planned a weekend of fun, first ringing in his 27th birthday with friends at the special midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" and then celebrating his first wedding anniversary on Sunday.

"He was a very, very good young man," said Sullivan's uncle, Joe Loewenguth. "He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him."

President Barack Obama, who called in his weekly radio address for prayer and reflection on the rampage, was scheduled to travel to Colorado on Sunday to visit with the families of victims.

During the attack early Friday, Holmes used the military-style semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on the unsuspecting theater-goers, Oates. Holmes had bought the weapons at local gun stores within the past two months. He recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet, the chief said.

The semiautomatic assault rifle used by the gunman jammed during the attack, a federal law enforcement official told The Associated Press, which forced the shooter to switch to another gun with less fire power.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to in order to discuss the investigation, said the disabled weapon had a high-capacity ammunition magazine. Police have said that a 100-round drum magazine was recovered at the scene and that such a device would be able to fire 50 to 60 rounds a minute.

Holmes also bought an urban assault vest, two magazine holders and a knife for just over $300 on July 2 from an online supplier of tactical gear for police and military personnel, according to the company.

Chad Weinman, CEO of TacticalGear.com, said his company processes thousands of orders each day, and there was nothing unusual in the one that Holmes placed.

"Everything Mr. Holmes purchased on July 2 is commercially available," Weinman said, adding he was "appalled" that the material was sold to Holmes before the shooting.

The Batman movie, the last in the trilogy starring Christian Bale, opened worldwide Friday with midnight showings in the U.S. "The Dark Knight Rises" earned $30.6 million in Friday morning midnight screenings and according to industry estimates roughly $75 million on that day. That put it on track for a weekend total of around $165 million, which would be the second-highest opening weekend ever, following "The Avengers."

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.

Two Roof Covering Styles to Enhance the Feel of Your Residence

The roof covering system of a home can make the adage "two heads are better than one" occur, in both figurative and literal sense. Some people aren't simply happy with one roofing style, as they would like to up the bet by going for yet another roof covering style. The outcome is an appealing roofing style that raises a residence's visual and, definitely, market value.

While numerous suburbs have houses with a minimum of one roof covering design, homes with a minimum of two are a common sight. Stars and very important individuals with a huge house are more most likely to use two roof covering styles to cover the entire house area. It can be said that different sections of the home demand different roofing styles. Here are a few crucial people whose residences have two or even more roof covering styles.

Ryan Seacrest

American Idol host Ryan Seacrest recently bought a home belonging to TV host Ellen DeGeneres for almost 50 million dollars. This realty in Beverly Hills mainly has a flat roof but a grey hip roof covering at the center. The hip roof gets rid of the plainness and recursion of flat roof coverings to provide it an adjustable design.

Justin Bieber

Teen singer Justin Bieber recently purchased a home for $ 6 million in Calabasas, California. This realty has a roof covering design so complex you can not identify what roofing designs are featured at first glimpse. Many of the home holds a cross hip roofing design, however some areas of Bieber's brand-new manor has gable roofs put in.

Steven Tyler

The frontman of Aerosmith Steven Tyler, currently the judge of American Idol, purchased a residence in tropical Maui for $ 4.8 million. The principal house features an unique hexagonal hip roof covering, generally seen in gazebos, while a secondary house comes with a gable roof. Besides the texture and color of the roof covering, this Maui home gives off a tropical environment appropriate for Hawaiian life. Salt Lake City roofers say that roof covering combinations may indicate your personal traits.

Blair Bangerter

Disney gave the green light for house builder Blair Bangerter to construct the renowned home in the movie "Up." Now housing a California family, a look-alike in Herriman, Utah, entices hundreds of tourists every single day. Salt Lake City roofing professionals determine the house having a simple hip roof covering with a Dutch gable roof variant for the garage.

You can also look at more houses of celebs with several roof covering designs by watching the slideshow at abcnews.go.com. Additionally, ask roofing specialists to recognize whether or not your home is fit to have two types of roofing Salt Lake City UT homes have.

Unattended BBQ Grill Sparks Apartment Fire In Hayward ? CBS San ...

Scorched deck of Hayward townhome after a fire sparked by an barbecue grill.

Scorched deck of Hayward townhome after a fire sparked by an barbecue grill.

HAYWARD (CBS SF) ? Fire crews believe a Hayward apartment fire that blazed on Friday afternoon was the result of an unattended barbecue grill that caught fire and spread to the deck of a two-level townhouse, a fire captain said.

Hayward fire Capt. Thor Poulsen said the fire was located in the 27000 block of Manon Avenue.

Poulsen said a woman in her 20s had been watching two young children when the unattended barbecue caught fire and grew too large to be put out with the use of a fire extinguisher.

The fire got extremely hot, melting the entire wall on the second level of the apartment, and everything inside is a loss, Poulsen said.

The townhouse caught fire at about 3:10 p.m., and the one-alarm blaze was contained by firefighters by 3:25 p.m., Poulsen said.

The damage to the property is estimated to be over $100,000, Poulsen said.

Five adults and four children were displaced Friday evening and the Red Cross is providing shelter to those displaced, Poulsen said.

No one was inside the unit when fire crews arrived and no injuries were reported, Poulsen said.

Poulsen also reminded Hayward residents that using a barbecue on Hayward apartment decks is illegal.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Hinted by Rockstar - Video Games Blogger

Rockstar Games have finally discussed the possibility of Red Dead Redemption 2, stating that news about a prequel or sequel to 2010?s blockbuster open world Western Red Dead Redemption is forthcoming.

To quote the Rockstar Games website answer to fan questions:

?Stay tuned for further announcements about the future of the Red Dead series.?

?Awesome, we love Red Dead too ? and are thrilled that so many of you loved John Marston?s tale and are excited for more epic Western action. As we mentioned in our last set of Asked & Answereds to similar questions about the future of other game franchises like Bully and L.A. Noire, we don?t always rush to make sequels but that does not mean that we won?t get to them eventually. Stay tuned for further announcements about the future of the Red Dead series.?

Hmmm, let?s muse this over? Rockstar could turn Red Dead Redemption 2 into a prequel with John still in his old gang, or after the Undead Nightmare DLC they could go to extremes and turn John into a zombie. What are your ideas?

As to where I got the weird zombie idea from, watch the Undead Nightmare final cutscene:

Would you like John Marston to retun as a zombie in Red Dead Redemption 2?

South Sudanese runner to compete under Olympic flag

LONDON (AP) ? The IOC has cleared a marathon runner born in what is now South Sudan to compete under the Olympic flag at the London Olympics.

The IOC executive board agreed Saturday to allow U.S.-based Guor Marial ? a former refugee ? to take part as an independent athlete.

"The voice of South Sudan has been heard," Marial told The Associated Press. "The South Sudan has finally got a spot in the world community. Even though I will not carry their flag in this Olympic Games, the country itself is there. The dream has come true. The hope of South Sudan is alive."

Marial has no passport and is not represented by a national Olympic committee. South Sudan gained independence last year after breaking away from Sudan but doesn't yet have a recognized Olympic body.

Marial moved to the United States as a refugee when he was a child and even though he has permanent residence in the U.S., he isn't yet an American citizen.

That meant he was unable to compete for the United States, South Sudan or Sudan, the IOC said, despite qualifying for the Olympics last year.

IOC spokesman Mark Adams said it was the first case of its kind for the Olympics.

When he was 8 years old, Marial escaped child slavery in a labor camp in Sudan. He is now 28 and lives in Flagstaff, Ariz. ? where he was preparing for training when he heard he was allowed to go to the Olympics.

"I was getting ready to go for a run. Wow. This is so exciting," he said. "It's hard to describe. I'm speechless. The body temperature is up. I have to train like an Olympian now."

The International Olympic Committee said three athletes from Netherlands Antilles also would be allowed to compete under the Olympic flag in London after the group of islands ceased to be an autonomous country.

Marial ran a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 32 seconds at the Twin Cities marathon last year, his first official race, to qualify for the London Games. He has improved on that time since.

A U.S. senator from New Hampshire, where Marial went to high school, also lent support to his Olympic bid. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen sent a letter to the IOC appealing for Marial to compete under the Olympic flag.

Marial attended high school in Concord, N.H., after fleeing to the United States. He graduated in 2005, earning an athletic scholarship to Iowa State University and became an All-American in cross country in his junior year.

He declined Sudan's invitation to compete under its flag because he didn't consider himself a citizen of that country. He said he doesn't want to compete for Sudan because he lost 28 family members during civil unrest.

The athlete's birth village is in what is now South Sudan and despite it being a newly independent state, it has struggled to form sporting bodies.

South Sudan was allowed in as the newest member of world football body FIFA in May but hasn't yet joined the Olympic family.

Athletes can take part at a games under the Olympic flag if politics has prevented them from doing so for a country.

At the 1992 Barcelona Games, competitors from Yugoslavia competed under the Olympic flag because of the break-up of that country, which left them with no national team. They didn't march at the opening ceremony but the Olympic flag was raised on their behalf during award ceremonies.

Four athletes from East Timor were allowed in under the Olympic flag in Sydney in 2000 because East Timor wasn't an independent country.

The IOC said this year that Kuwaiti athletes could compete as independents in the London Games after suspending the country's Olympic committee in 2010 because of government interference. They've since lifted the Kuwaiti ban.

Marial said he'll ask his father ? who still lives in South Sudan ? to travel to the nearest city to watch him on TV if he gets to compete at the Olympics.

"Most important is the people of South Sudan. They struggle so much, so if I can accomplish something, I can help," Marial said in an interview with AP on Friday. "That's why every morning, I get up, I put on my shoes and I train."

One season later Harley-Davidson had put out 3 development motorbikes for the community. This is when history begins Harley Davidson motorcycles. In 1905 Harley-Davidson benefits it's first competition and employs it's first worker. Three decades later, in 1908, Harley-Davidson marketed the first motorcycle to be used in cops assistance to the Detroit Police Division. In 1912 H-D began developing it's 6 tale producer and exports it's first motorbikes to Asia, once sales were prolonged outside of the Combined Declares.

Harley-Davidson and Native indian are the only two motorcycle organizations in The united states, until 1953. As the globe goes into into Globe War 2, so does Hd go returning into Military motorcycle development, and the assistance university is turned returning into the army motorcycle assistance university, also known as the Quartermaster Institution for army techniques. During now the community could hardly get their hands on a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle.

Hd purchases another 49% of Buell motorcyles creating them the majority owner in the organization and creating the creator Erik Buell chair of functions. In 2003, more than 250,000 riders meet on The usa for the final stop of the "Open Road Tour" and to enjoy Harley-Davidson's 100th Birthday and Party. Harley-Davidson and the Muscle Dystrophy Association(MDA) indicate 25 decades together as associates in the battle against Muscle Dystrophy. In 2006 Hd declares programs to begin a art gallery for the motorcycle company and programs for the starting to be in 2008.Through now H-D has been successful competitions and helping non profit organizations and individuals to make life better. This brief history on the developing of the organization is just a part of the Harley-Davidson history. Most individuals affiliate H-D with outlaw riders and dark set overcoats but many individuals don't know the otherside of factors with Harley-Davidson. The work with non profit organizations and rushing through out the whole growth of the organization are factors many individuals don't realize about this little household possessed company, that is now The greatest motorcycle producer.
