London Wasps 26 Gloucester 24: match report

?From our point of view, it was a massive kick and it puts us in a better position than if we had lost the game,? said Young. ?It would still have been in our hands but it gives us a little bit of a cushion that we would probably not have had if we had lost.

?There?s no reason why Newcastle can?t win one, maybe two games, so it?s up to us to go to Harlequins and Bath and make sure that the last game of the season is not another one where we are gripping on to the edge of our seats.?

Even after Daly?s kick, Wasps still gave their fans anxious moments. Having dominated the scrums, they lost one against the head, which gave Gloucester the opportunity for a final attack that was shunted into touch, much to Young?s relief.

Wasps will need to show more composure if they are to avoid a last-day relegation showdown because they almost tossed away a commanding 13-point lead with some aimless kicking out of defence that allowed Gloucester to score superb counter-attack tries from Charlie Sharples and Akapusi Qera.

?It?s just put three or four years on me,? Young said. ?We are just thrilled to get the win because we won it four times and lost it three.

?We got ourselves in a commanding position halfway through the second half and tried our best to commit suicide. You certainly can?t kick the ball to their full-back [Jonny May] and give him space to run.?

But Wasps did show character by overcoming a late reshuffle enforced by the late withdrawals of United States centre Paul Emerick (hamstring) and wing Jack Wallace (back), who failed late fitness tests and joined an already lengthy casualty list.

Despite the enforced reshuffle, which meant promotion for Ryan Davis and on-loan Wales wing Tom Prydie, Wasps settled quicker and hit Gloucester with a 10-point salvo in the first five minutes.

Robinson, who left Gloucester last summer after he was not offered a contract, punished his former club for going offside with a first-minute penalty. Gloucester were then caught dozing by Billy Vunipola?s quickly-taken free-kick and scrum-half Nic Berry strolled through a yawning gap in the visitors? defence for a cheeky try.

Gloucester squandered some hard-won possession with some ill-directed kicking from Freddie Burns, but the fly-half popped up in a promising move that featured wings James Simpson-Daniel and Sharples, May and Qera before Scotland hooker Scott Lawson crossed on the overlap.

Robinson restored Wasps? advantage with two penalties either side of half-time and he also converted Hugo Southwell?s try after Berry?s break had been well supported by Prydie.

Despite their difficulties in the set-piece, Gloucester were always dangerous when they were given space, and a break from Luke Narraway and superb inside pass from Nick Runciman set up Sharples.

Robinson then found May with a speculative upfield punt which allowed the full-back to attack from his own 22, with centre Henry Trinder providing the link and Qera galloping over. Wasps? chance appeared to have gone when Robinson missed two penalties in a six-minute period, but Gloucester lacked the control and composure to hold on to their slender lead.
