10 companies predicted to disappear in 2013 include NFL Raiders, American Airlines

American institutions such as American Airlines and Avon are destined to "disappear" by 2013, the investment website Wall Street 24/7 predicts.

In its annual feature, the website revealed 10 companies it believes won?t be around anymore after next year.

Included in the list are the airline and makeup manufacturer alongside the Oakland Raiders NFL team.

Here?s their list:
10. Avon: The door-to-door cosmetics company ignores its core market of cosmetics, the website says. It also recently replaced its CEO and its CFO lost his job over a Security and Exchange Commission examination.

Wall Street 24/7 quotes Morningstar analyst Erin Lash: ?Avon is constantly putting out fires rather than proactively moving forward.?

9. Metro PCS: Bigger players T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint-Nextel are pushing the smaller cellular provider from the marketplace. The stock has dropped to $5.86 from a yearly high of $17.84.

8. Oakland Raiders:?OK, the Raiders are going to vanish, they?re just moving back to Los Angeles, the site said.

The NFL team?s stadium contract to play in Oakland expires next year.?Coincidentally, Los Angeles city council just approved plans to pursue a new NFL-ready stadium.

7. Salon.com: The ?pioneering news and commentary? website is swimming in debt, apparently.

It had less than $150,000 cash to end 2011 as it relied on bailouts from Adobe co-founder John Warnock and investment banker Bill Hambrecht.

6. Suzuki:?A bad reputation (not necessarily deserved) and shrinking market share are working against American Suzuki Motor Co.
While Kia and Hyundai take over the low-cost, high-efficiency market, Suzuki chokes on their exhaust.

5. Pacific Sunwear:?Pitching the California lifestyle isn?t paying the bills anymore. The company?s stock price settled at $2.50 on Friday from $23 five years ago.

4. Research in Motion:?A classic example of resting on your laurels caught RIM looking when Apple?s iPhone stormed the market.
But what happened when Google?s Android replaced it as the No. 2 choice?

3. Current TV:?Al Gore?s network is failing fast enough the cable provider Time-Warner is likely to drop it soon.

If you?ve never seen it, Current is ?the Peabody and Emmy Award-winning television and online network? with ?the very best in political commentary, news analysis, and thought provoking programming.?

Now you know.

2. Talbots:?This women?s retailer is a victim to the recession and a competitive marketplace.

1. American Airlines:?Wall Street 24/7 says the airline won?t emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy despite claims to the contrary.?Selling assets to US Airways is likely to satisfy creditors and unions while competing with the Northwest-Delta and United-Continental mergers.

Last year, the site says it successfully predicted the demise of MySpace, Saab, the Ericsson in mobile company Sony-Ericsson and the A&W portion in Yum! Brands.

However, Wall Street 24/7 also admits missteps.

The site is impressed Nokia and American Apparel are still operating (for now, anyway), although it did admit making bad calls on Sears, Sony Pictures, Soap Opera Digest and Kellogg?s Corn Pops.

GOP attack ad: Obama makes babies cry

By Jonathan Terbush
Saturday, September 29, 2012 19:39 EDT

?

President Obama has been such a big meanie president that he?s now making children cry.

That?s the implication of a new attack ad released last week by the conservative super PAC Americans for Job Security. In the ad, a female jogger pushing a baby stroller says that she goes running ?to forget? all the economic problems in America, like the fact that her husband has been laid off twice.

?I voted for Obama, but hope and change was just a slogan,? she says.

?The future is getting worse under Obama,? she adds, as the camera cuts to the child in the stroller, who is now crying.

The ad is part of a major TV offensive Americans for Job Security has planned for the final month before the November election. The group has put up $8.1 million to air the ad in half a dozen swing states that will be vital to either candidate?s opes of winning the election.

NYC Ferris wheel project has big backers

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Ferris wheel may be a steam-age invention, but it is back in vogue in New York, which this week joined a long list of cities where urban planners or developers have bet that massive, modern versions of the old ride can serve as economic engines.

After the towering London Eye debuted in early 2000, it seemed as if there was no end to the number of cities dreaming about stimulating tourism by building their own giant observation wheel, modeled after the one drawing 3.5 million riders per year in Britain.

Re-creating London's success has proved to be daunting, with failed or postponed projects in a number of world-class cities. But the concept still has luster. Work is being done on two new massive wheels in Las Vegas. Seattle saw a smaller version open on its waterfront last spring.

Now, the biggest test yet will come in New York, where city officials announced Thursday that a private development group had been given approval to build the world's tallest Ferris wheel, at 625 feet, on the waterfront in Staten Island.

The proposal, with a $230 million price tag, is audacious. Its success would rely on people being willing to travel by miles by ferry across New York Harbor to a remote, mostly suburban part of the city that has always been an afterthought to visitors.

Yet the people behind the project, led by a newly formed company, New York Wheel, include some heavy hitters.

The primary financial backers include Lloyd Goldman, a real estate baron who is part of the partnership redeveloping the World Trade Center site, and Joseph Nakash, a co-founder of the Jordache apparel company who now chairs an investment group that also owns airlines and real estate. The third primary investor is The Feil Organization, a real estate powerhouse that owns or manages commercial and residential properties across the country.

New York Wheel CEO Richard Marin spent decades as an executive at Bankers Trust Company, then led a subsidiary at Bear Stearns until some black eyes related to bad bets on mortgage securities led to his departure in 2007. After that, he had a job turning around a distressed real estate portfolio as CEO of Africa Israel Investments.

Now, though those real estate connections, he's found himself in the carnival business ? or at least the venture capital version of it.

"It's a short trip from Wall Street to P.T. Barnum," Marin joked in a phone interview Friday.

Marin said the heft in the investment group shows it isn't just blindly following a trendy tourism gimmick.

While the London wheel was "wildly successful," he isn't naive about the challenge in replicating its success. Marin said the company spent a year and a half in discussions with city officials about a possible site before agreeing on Staten Island.

Under the deal announced Thursday, New York Wheel will pay the city $1 million per year on a 99-year lease for a waterfront location within walking distance of the Staten Island Ferry terminal. Simultaneously, another development group will be building a 350,000-square-foot shopping mall and hotel on the opposite side of the terminal. The neighborhood is already home to a minor league baseball stadium.

"It's a location and a site that I have come to love," Marin said.

Having the wheel next to the ferry, which is already ridden by an estimated 2 million tourists annually, will save the developers about $100 million in transportation infrastructure costs, he said. And, despite the distance from other tourist sites, the view of New York harbor will be thrilling and unique enough, he predicted, to draw the millions of riders needed to earn back the ride's high cost.

Several other giant Ferris wheels built in the past decade have been successful. China's 525-foot-tall Star of Nanchang and Singapore's 541-foot Singapore Flyer have both been a hit with tourists.

In other places, planned wheels never got off the ground. A 682-foot-tall wheel that was supposed to open in Beijing in time for the 2008 Olympics was never completed. An earlier pioneer in the business, the Great Wheel Corp., had projects in the works to build similar wheels in Dubai, Berlin, Orlando, Fla., and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, but all were either suspended or collapsed.

"These are expensive and difficult, big projects," said Wil Armstrong, the North American representative for Starneth, a new company, formed by veterans of the London Eye design and engineering team, that is providing the designs for the New York wheel. "Every city, it seems, of any size, has thought about it. But wanting to do and actually doing it is a large step."

The Top 20 Technology-Driven Trends in 2012 | The Raddon Report

Home ? Featured Article, Technology

The following article was originally posted in Daniel Burrus? Technotrends newsletter earlier this year.? Daniel was recently a keynote speaker at Raddon?s CEO Forum.

No matter what industry you?re in, your company can?t survive without technology. And these days, even non-technical employees know that technology goes way beyond desktop computers and networks. From smart phones and tablet computers to mobile apps and cloud-based technology, there?s a plethora of technological advancements to not only keep track of, but also to profit from. To stay competitive, your organization needs to anticipate the future technology trends that are shaping your business and then develop innovative ways to implement them in your organization.

Now that 2012 is well underway, be ready for the following 20 technology-driven trends to continue to create both disruption and opportunity in the business world. But rather than just react to them, be pre-active to future known events and plan how your company will profit from them now. That?s the only way you?ll gain competitive advantage in the coming years.

  1. Rapid Growth of Big Data. Big Data is a term used to describe the technologies and techniques used to capture and utilize the exponentially increasing streams of data with the goal of bringing enterprise-wide visibility and insights to make rapid critical decisions. High Speed Analytics using advanced cloud services will increasingly be used as a complement to existing information management systems and programs to tame the massive data explosion. This new level of data integration and analytics will require many new skills and cross-functional buy-in in order to break down the many data and organizational silos that still exist. The rapid increase in data makes this a fast growing hard trend that cannot be ignored.
  2. Cloud Computing and Advanced Cloud Services will be increasingly embraced by business of all sizes, as this represents a major shift in how organizations obtain and maintain software, hardware, and computing capacity. As consumers, we first experienced public clouds (think about when you use Google or Apple?s MobileMe and now iCloud). Then we saw more private clouds and hybrid clouds from businesses such as Flextronics, Siemens, Accenture, and many others, all using the cloud to cut costs in human resources and sales management functions. This was only the beginning, as cloud services enable the rapid transformation all business processes.
  3. On Demand Services will increasingly be offered to companies needing to rapidly deploy new services. Hardware as a Service (HaaS) joins Software as a Service (SaaS), creating what some have called ?IT as a service.? All will grow rapidly for small as well as large companies, with many new players in a multitude of business process categories. These services will help companies cut costs as they provide access to powerful software programs and the latest technology without having the expense of a large IT staff and time-consuming, expensive upgrades. As a result, IT departments in all industries will be increasingly freed to focus on enabling business process transformation, which will allow organizations to maximize their return on their technology investments.
  4. Virtualization of Storage, Desktops, Applications, and Networking will see continued acceptance and growth by both large and small businesses as virtualization security improves. We will continue to see the virtualization of processing power, allowing mobile devices to access supercomputer capabilities and apply it to processes such as purchasing and logistics, to name a few.
  5. Consumerization of IT Increases as the source for innovation and technology continues to be driven by the consumer thanks to rapid advances in processing power, storage, and bandwidth. Smart companies have recognized that this is a hard tend that will continue and have stopped fighting consumerization. Instead, they are turning it into a competitive advantage by consumerizing their applications, such as recommending safe and secure third party hardware and apps. Encouraging employees to share productivity enhancing consumer technology will become a wise strategy.
  6. Gamification of Training and Education will fuel a fast moving hard trend using advanced simulations and skill-based learning systems that are self-diagnostic, interactive, game-like, and competitive, all focused on giving the user an immersive experience thanks to a photo-realistic 3D interface. Some will develop software using these gaming techniques to work on existing hardware systems such as the Xbox and PlayStation. A social component that includes sharing will drive success.
  7. Social Business takes on a new level of urgency as organizations shift from an Information Age ?informing? model to a Communication Age ?communicating and engaging? model. Social Software for business will reach a new level of adoption with applications to enhance relationships, collaboration, networking, social validation, and more. Social Search will increasingly be used by marketers and researchers, not to mention Wall Street, to tap into millions of daily tweets and Facebook conversations, providing real-time analysis of many key consumer metrics.
  8. Smart Phones & Tablets Become Our Primary Personal Computers, and the Mobile Web becomes a must-have capability. An Enterprise Mobility Strategy Becomes Mandatory for all size organizations as we see mobile data, mobile media, mobile sales, mobile marketing, mobile commerce, mobile finance, mobile payments, mobile health, and many more explode. The vast majority of mobile phones sold globally will have a browser, making the smart phone our primary computer that is with us 24/7 and signaling a profound shift in global computing. This new level of mobility will allow any size business to transform how they market, sell, communicate, collaborate, educate, train, and innovate using mobility.
  9. Tablet Computers with Enterprise Level Web Apps will be used to transform sales and service support and then move to purchasing, logistics, just-in-time training, and much more.
  10. Intelligent Electronic Agents using natural language voice commands takes off with Apple?s Siri, rapidly followed by Android, Microsoft, and others all offering what will become a mobile electronic concierge on your smart devices including your phone, tablet, and television. Soon retailers will have a Siri-like sales assistant, and maintenance workers will have a Siri-like assistant. The possibilities are endless.
  11. Digital Identity Management will become increasingly important to both organizations and individuals as new software allows users to better manage their multiple identities across business and personal networks. Next Generation Biometrics will play a key role in both identity management and security.
  12. Visual Communications takes video conferencing to a new level with programs like SKYPE, FaceTime, and others giving us video communication on phones, tablets, and home televisions. Visual Communications will be integrated with current video conferencing systems, fueling this as a main relationship-building tool for businesses of all sizes.
  13. Enhanced Location Awareness will accelerate the number of business-to-consumer apps for smart phones and tablets that will take geo-social marketing and sales to a new level of creative application, driving rapid growth.
  14. Geo-Spatial Visualization combines geographic information systems (GIS) with location-aware data, RFID (radio frequency identification), and other location-aware sensors (including the current location of users from the use of their mobile devices) to create new insights and competitive advantage. Early applications include logistics and supply chain to name a few.
  15. Smart TV Using Apps will get a major boost in the marketplace, fueling a major shift in home viewing. Ever wonder how you could have over 500 cable or satellite channels and nothing to watch? You didn?t have apps on your TV allowing you to personalize the experience. This is the beginning of a major shift that will take place in living rooms globally. Look for Apple to introduce the iTV (living room size iPad).
  16. Multiple App Stores for all smart phone, tablet, and television operating systems (Android, Blackberry, Windows, and others) will take off, creating an abundant distribution and sales ecosystem for all. This will cement the revolution versus evolution that apps software represents. We will see business app stores for the enterprise starting this year.
  17. 3D Displays for Smart Phones and Tablets will be the breakthrough that will drive wide-scale consumer acceptance of 3D computing. 3D Computing for the enterprise will grow rapidly for military, medicine, fashion, architecture, and entertainment applications.
  18. eBooks, eNewspapers, and eMagazines Pass the Tipping Point due to the abundance of smartphones with readable displays, tablets that provide a full color experience, and publishers providing apps that give a better than paper experience by including cut, copy, paste, print, and multimedia capabilities. In addition, eBook readers will have high quality with a low enough price to bring in the masses.
  19. Interactive Multimedia eTextbooks will finally take off thanks to Apple?s iBook Author and other competing tools, freeing new publishers to create compelling and engaging content, and freeing students from a static, expensive, and literally heavy experience.
  20. Wireless Machine-to-Machine applications such as two-way meter reading, surveillance, vending machine, and point-of-sale solutions take off thanks to faster wireless data networks.

Spot Your Own Trends

Are these the only technology-driven trends for 2012 to be aware of? Of course not. As we all know from past experience, technology is always evolving, resulting in new trends emerging and new products appearing every day. That?s why smart organizations stay ahead of the trends by anticipating them, adapting them to their unique environment before the competition does, and ultimately enabling the organization to profit from them. The more you?re able to do that, the sooner your organizations will reach the next level of success.

Little Compton Sports Fields Need Major Investment - Tiverton-Little ...

Don't let the backhoe and construction teams at Little Compton's baseball field in the Commons fool you, the town's playing fields are in big trouble.

While a grant secured in 2007 is funding improvements to the areas surrounding the playing fields, Little Compton's Recreation, Conservation and Open Spaces Committee Chairman Patrick McHugh said the town's soccer, baseball and lacrosse fields are falling further into disrepair.

The fields do not drain properly, causing youths to play in unsafe soggy, drenched conditions. Caps from septic system impede soccer players on the field - causing falls, the fields are not level - making players more susceptible to injury, and the tennis courts have cracks wide enough to swallow a players foot.

"It's sad that this is an affluent town with such beautiful places and open spaces and his is what our kids are playing on," said McHugh. "We have forsaken the children."?

The $80,000 state Department of Environmental Management grant that funded the 720-foot stone dust walking path, replaced fences, relocated the concession stand and installed drainage pipes and a retaining wall around the baseball field will not correct safety hazards or bring any of the town's three athletic fields at the Commons into compliance.

"It was a passive grant, so what can be funded are trails, paths and this work that's being done," said McHugh. The grant will not pay for any improvements to action-oriented infrastructure, like fields.

According to McHugh, the Peckham field, which will soon be the location of the temporary classroom pods for the Wilbur-McMahon School, could be drained and leveled at a cost of $250,000. However, given that the school is already paying to grade and rip up the turf to make it suitable for the pods, McHugh is proposing that the school district study the cost of finishing the job and making the field safe and compliant for Little Compton's youth athletes once the pods are removed next year. The school district would be required to re-fill the lot anyway, he said.

"We are hoping that after all the negotiations [the town] will realize that all they need to do is throw maybe another $100,000 at it and we are going to have a safe, compliant field," said McHugh.

McHugh doesn't know how much money the town could save by doubling these two projects, but he is adamant it needs to be done to provide a safe atmosphere for youth athletics.

"We're not trying to raise taxes," said McHugh. "My committee has a track record of using grants and donations to fund projects, but we need this corrected for the schools and for the kids."

McHugh found a 20 percent matching grant from the United States Tennis Association earlier this year to fund the $100,000 worth of work needed on the tennis courts, but cannot secure enough up-front funding to begin the project.

Although the work on the perimeter of the Commons baseball field will be completed in just over a week, the athletic complex is far from suitable for Little Compton's youth, said McHugh.

"The fight for this is for whether we are a town that supports families and children or whether we are a retirement and vacation town," said McHugh. "There is a lack of balance. If we cannot support schools and children, the I don't know where it's going to go."

Your liver is the gateway to health, vitality and beauty. ?The liver is a key organ within the human body and is nothing short of a miracle. ?It acts as ?purification plant? and a manufacturing and storage organ for nutrients and vitamins. ?A well functioning liver eliminates metabolic wastes, environmental toxins, drug residues, viruses, bacteria and excess hormones. ?An overloaded liver can manifest many unpleasant symptoms such as weight gain, constipation and /or diarrhea, inability to digest fatty foods, high cholesterol, bad breath, a yellowish looking, impure or itchy skin, hormonal imbalances, lack of concentration, depression, irritability, headaches, and waking between midnight and 3am. ?Ongoing tiredness is called the ?silent pain of the liver?. If liver detoxification is suboptimal the body also becomes over time susceptible to common degenerative diseases such as arthritis, skin conditions, autoimmune illnesses and cancer.

?

Why you need to daily cleanse your kidneys

Taking a shower is a normal part of our daily cleansing ritual, but have you ever thought of taking an internal shower? ?The kidneys are an important partner to the liver as they flush toxins made water-soluble by the liver. ?When the kidneys are working well this is reflected in a healthy urinary, sexual and reproductive system, a pure skin and supple, flexible joints. ?Kidney specific herbs help to detoxify and decongest the body. With their alkalising properties they further help to flush out uric acid and metabolic wastes often encountered in conditions such as allergies, eczema, arthritis and gout.

?

Why you need to move and nourish your body

We are made to move! Fresh air and exercise is essential for good health.

Beauty, radiance and vitality are linked directly with fitness and a good diet. You are meant to move! ?Fresh air and exercise are essential for good health. ?Exercise promotes essential detoxification, improves the metabolism and burns calories. ?Even a moderate level of exercise promotes circulation, oxygenation and lymphatic clearance to improve digestion, immunity, sleep and bone health. ?As a bonus, it also reduces stress levels.

?

When you have a sedentary lifestyle (i.e. when you don?t move very much) not only will you gradually gain fat that becomes difficult to shift with age, you will also loose muscle tone which is linked with youth and vitality. ?Therefore, if you get your heart rate up and even go so far as to break a sweat (just a little one) every day then this will get your heart pumping, boost metabolism, increase circulation, improve your mood, build muscle and burn fat.

?

Our body thrives best on a diet of organic vegetable and fruits, high quality plant proteins and organic meats.

Furthermore, your body thrives best on a diet of organic vegetables and fruits (a minimum of five serves a day), high quality plant proteins and low levels of organic meats. ?It is clinically proven that a diet high in sugar, saturated fat and processed foods will cause a lack of antioxidant protection, promote inflammation and poor health. ?Hormones and antibiotics in conventionally farmed pork, beef, chicken and milk combined with pesticides and herbicides from non-organic fruits and vegetables add to a high toxic load. ?Spring is a good time to rethink what you eat and incorporate those nourishing, fresh and vitalizing foods into your meals. ?Include vegetables like garlic, onions, broccoli, cabbage, radishes, mushrooms and asparagus as they help remove toxins from the blood stream. ?Make sure you include generous amounts of greens, as they are high in B vitamins and minerals.

?

?

?

?

A daily detox is the easiest and most effective way to give your body what it needs to feel the best that it can.? The best way to do this is by incorporating the certified organic ARTEMIS Detox Tea Remedies into your routine. ?Add exercise and healthy diet to this winning mix and you will be amazed how great you feel and how much energy you have!

?

A free article offers farmers and growers advice on management options for green stink bugs

The green stink bug is one of the most damaging native stink bug species in the United States. Stink bugs feeding on cotton, soybeans, tomatoes, peaches, and other crops can result in cosmetic damage as well as reduced quality and yield.

A new article in the Journal of Integrated Pest Management, "Biology and Management of the Green Stink Bug," offers farmers and growers advice on how to deal with this insect pest.

According to the authors, stink bugs have become a major challenge to integrated pest management systems because control options are basically limited to the application of broad-spectrum insecticides such as organophosphates, carbamates, and pyrethroids. However, neonicotinoids are generally effective for control of this stink bug and may be less disruptive to its natural enemies.

Further options for stink bug management that are being explored include the use of trap crops and enhancing beneficial parasitoid populations. Cultural options, including trap cropping and the planting of resistant varieties, have been documented as decreasing crop injury by stink bugs. In addition, there are multiple natural enemies that reduce population numbers.

The authors go on to describe the green stink bug's life cycle, seasonal biology, host plants, and management options such as pheromone trapping, chemical control, cultural control, and biological control.

How is a Kindle like a cuttlefish? Parallels between e-Paper technology and biological organisms that change color

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? Over millions of years, biological organisms -- from the chameleon and cuttlefish to the octopus and squid -- have developed color-changing abilities for adaptive concealment (e.g., camouflage) and communication signaling (e.g., warning or mating cues).

Over the past two decades, humans have begun to develop sophisticated e-Paper technology in electronic devices that reflect and draw upon the ambient light around you to create multiple colors, contrast and diffusion to communicate text and images.

And given the more than 100 million years head start that evolution has provided to these animals and their cellular systems, it's not surprising that e-Paper devices lag behind in optical performance, especially color generation.

In an effort to close that gap, a multidisciplinary team led by University of Cincinnati researchers came out Sept. 26 with a paper that aims to help biologists who work with these color-changing creatures and engineers who work with e-Paper technology.

Authors are Eric Kreit, a recent doctoral graduate in UC's College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS); Lydia M. M?thger and Roger T. Hanlon, research scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass.; Patrick B. Dennis and Rajesh R. Naik, scientists at the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base; Eric Forsythe, scientist at the Army Research Laboratory; and Jason Heikenfeld, associate professor of electronic and computing systems, also in the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS).

According to UC's Kreit, "Our main goals were threefold: To allow display engineers to learn from millions of years of natural selection and evolution. To teach biologists the most advanced mechanisms and performance measurements used in human-made reflective e-Paper and to give all scientists a clearer picture of the long-term prospects for capabilities such as adaptive concealment and what can be learned from now you see me, now you don't mechanisms."

Ways in Which Animals and Electronics Are Alike

One of the researchers' key findings is that there are numerous approaches to change the reflective color of a surface and that the highest-performance approaches developed by both humans and nature share some powerful common features. Both use pigment, and both change or achieve color expression by either spreading or compacting that pigment. Animals use muscle fiber to spread or compact pigment, and electronics make use of an electric field to do so.

However, even if the basic approach for color change is similar, humanity has never developed anything as complex or sophisticated as the biology and physics of cephalopod skin. (Cephalopods are a diverse ocean group and include 700 species of cuttlefish, squid and octopus -- and are the acknowledged masters of color change on the planet).

According to Heikenfeld, "The highest performance human-made approaches have been only recently developed, well after numerous other approaches were tried. Perhaps in the past, if we had more closely trusted nature's ability to find the best solution, we would be further along today in creating better display technology."

Animals Are Efficient Users of Available Light

Biological organisms that change color are very efficient at using available light. The animal's skin either reflects light to achieve a bright-color effect or absorbs light to achieve stunning, multi-colored effects.

In their use of available light, the biological organisms are more efficient than electronic devices, which generally require large amounts of electric power to generate an internal/emissive light to generate bright color.

Said Roger Hanlon, "Cephalopod skin is exquisitely beautiful and radiant, and can be changed in milliseconds, all without generating any intrinsic light from within the skin; there are elegant solutions from biology waiting to be translated to our consumer and industrial world."

In fact, overall, animals "outscore" synthetic devices when it comes to sophistication and integrated systems; required energy use for color change; size scalability (cephalopods' adaptive coloration works over a wide range of sizes in the organisms' class -- from small-size cuttlefish to large-size octopus and squid); and surface texture (cephalopods can selectively adapt or "crinkle" their skins to match a variety of three-dimensional textures, which provides additional light scattering and shadowing).

Electronic Devices Achieve Colors Faster and Achieve More Colors

Human-developed technology is far superior to cephalopods or other color-adapting animals when it comes to speed. In other words, human-made electronics can achieve color and a color change faster than the response time of a biological organism.

In addition, synthetic devices can provide a greater range of colors and more efficient dark or black state. In other words, a device can achieve a black screen, but most biological organisms cannot achieve such darkened coloring. This is, in part, due to the fact that an organism like a marine animal generally has no reason, in terms of survival adaptation or signaling, to go to a dark or black state. Such an adaptation would actually make them more visible, not less, to predators.

This research was funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory, National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Laboratory, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Office of Naval Research.

What It Takes to Get Leads from Apartment Complexes | The Niche ...

?

The beauty of marketing to, and getting leads from, apartment complexes is that the addresses never change, but the people who live there do, so you are constantly marketing to new people.?

?

I owned a mortgage company.? I also owned a buyer/broker real estate company, and at the same time, co-owned a mortgage company with a larger builder.? Over 20 percent of our leads were generated by consistently marketing to tenants who lived in apartment complexes. ?

?

In fact, the NAR, in their report called ?Profile of Home Buyers and Home Sellers (latest version), reports on ?Prior Living Arrangements? Before Buying a Home.? Here are the statistics:

?

??????????? 37%? Married Couples rented before buying a home

??????????? 49%? Single Females rented before buying a home

??????????? 47%? Single Males rented before buying a home

??????????? 58%? Unmarried couples rented before buying a home

?

To me, getting leads and marketing to apartment complexes is a no-brainer?when it comes to targeting the largest number of people with a single campaign. And once you have set it up as a pillar of your business, you can use it over, and over, and over again.?

?

But, you?ve got to do it right.?

?

Here are 10 things that will help you get the same results that I did!?

?

Tip #1 ? Consistency Is the Key!? The beauty of marketing to apartment complexes is that you are constantly marketing to new people, because tenants move in and out on a regular basis.? Send a series of 3 post cards, within 10 days of each other, in February and July, because over 60% of apartment dwellers move in May and September.?

?

Tip #2 ? Send Post Cards Instead of Letters. ? Post cards are easy to read and cost less money to create.? However, I recommend that the post card size be at LEAST 5? x 7? and you spend the extra money to send it first class mail.? Instead of 2-color or 4-color printing, save money by using colored card stock and print with black ink.

?

Tip #3 ? Create a 14-Week Mailing Campaign ? So what do you send between the months of February and July?? One of the most successful campaigns I used is one called ?7 Tips on How to Buy Real Estate.?? Mail one tip every 2 weeks.? Start on April 1, and the campaign will be completed by July 1.

?

Tip #4 ? The Headline Is the Key to Getting your Message Read.? One of the most effective headlines I have tested says, ?When your lease is up, do you know where you are going to live??? It?s thought-provoking because it gets people thinking about where they?re going to live when their lease expires.?

?

Tip #5 ? ?Give Prospects Multiple Ways to Contact You.? Not all prospects are the same!? Some want to call you and talk your head off.? Some only want to email you.? Others want to visit your website first?and then decide if they want to do business with you or not.? Consider including your cell phone number too.

?

Tip #6 ? Have a Follow-up Plan ? Do you have a systematic plan to keep in touch with prospects?? One of the best ways is to ASK them for permission??do you mind if I call you in 2 days to follow up?? Can I send you something in the mail?? Can I email you the information?? Can I send you a free report or white paper??? Send whatever you promised within 24 hours because timeliness is the key!

?

Tip #7 ? ?You?ve Gotta Have a Database ? Even if you still use 3 x 5 cards, it?s better than nothing! As your leads come pouring in the door, you need a way not only to keep in touch, but to track your conversion from prospects, straight through to the sale.? With a database, you will be able to track how long it takes from first contact until they purchase something. You can also track where your leads are coming from?real estate ads, newspaper, postcards, seminars??

?

Tip #8 ? ?The Internet Is Your Friend.? When choosing the ?right? apartment complex, you can find literally anything about the complex, including number of units, location, rental amounts, and the list goes on.? Check out the website for free tips on how to do your research in helping you choose ones that are most likely to respond.?

?

Tip #9 ? How to Check for Vacancy.? No, the apartment manager is not going to tell you that 40% of the units are vacant.? Drive through the complex around 8 pm to see how many lights are illuminated; how many cars are in the parking lot; how many grills are on the balcony or patio.? Include your return address on your post card and pay for first-class postage.? If units are vacant, the post office should notify you.?

?

Tip #10 ? ?Schedule Home-Buyer Seminars. Instead of spending tons of money placing an ad in your local homes magazines, send a post card to apartment complexes announcing your event with a short outline of what they will learn.? Focus on the ?wealth building?tax savings?ownership aspect of homeownership.? Stay away from mortgage programs, home inspections, title insurance?basically the technical stuff.? You?ll get more attendees if you focus on the financial and emotional benefits.?

?

So, if you?ve ever thought about marketing to apartment complexes, it?s the perfect storm.? Rents are rising.? Home prices are stabilizing.? Mortgage interest rates are awesome.

New SARS-like virus found, man critically ill in UK

LONDON (Reuters) - A Qatari man struck down with a previously unknown virus related to the deadly SARS infection and the common cold is critically ill in hospital in Britain, the World Health Organisation said on Monday.

The U.N. health body put out a global alert on Sunday saying a new virus had infected the 49-year-old man who had recently travelled to Saudi Arabia - where another man with an almost identical virus had already died.

Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) and respiratory disease experts said there was no immediate cause for concern, although authorities were watching out for any signs of the virus spreading.

"This new virus ... is different from any that have previously been identified in humans," the HPA said.

Any suggestions of a link between the virus and Saudi Arabia will cause particular concern in the build-up to next month's Muslim haj pilgrimage, when millions of people arrive in the kingdom from across the world, then return to their homes.

The virus, known as a coronavirus, comes from the same family as SARS which emerged in 2002 and killed 800 people.

"This is now an international issue," WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said. "The (Qatari) patient is still alive but, as we understand, in critical condition," he said.

The HPA said it was recommending the Qatari patient be treated in isolation by doctors and nurses wearing gowns, gloves respirators, goggles and other protective equipment.

It did not recommend any specific actions for travellers or other members of the public.

INTENSIVE CARE

The Qatari man first showed symptoms of an acute respiratory infection while he was in Qatar, the WHO said.

He spent some time in intensive case in Qatar and was later flown to the UK where he was currently in a London hospital's intensive care unit, being treated for acute respiratory infection and kidney failure. Officials declined to name the hospital.

Andrew Easton, a virologist at Britain's University of Warwick, said that with only two cases so far, it was difficult for experts to estimate the potential threat.

"The important thing is to be aware of the virus and to be on the lookout for any evidence that it is more than a rare chance event," he said.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that includes causes of the common cold but can also include more severe illness such as the virus responsible for SARS.

SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, appeared in China in 2002 and infected more than 8,000 people worldwide, killing around 800 of them before being brought under control.

John Oxford, a professor of Virology at Queen Mary, University of London, said he was not too concerned as the new virus was "more likely to join numerous other members of the coronavirus family and behave like a nasty infection rather than join the exception group like SARS".

"SARS was very quick off the mark infecting hospital staff," he said in an emailed comment. "And this new virus does not to me appear to be in the same ?big bang' group."

The WHO said it was in touch with health authorities in Britain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the Stockholm-based European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)

"We're asking for information from whoever might have seen such cases, but as of the moment we haven't had any more notifications of cases," said Hartl.

The HPA said it had conducted lab testing on Qatari case and found a 99.5 percent match to a virus that killed a 60-year-old Saudi national earlier this year. The Saudi man's virus was not identified as a new kind of infection at the time of his death.

There was no evidence of ongoing transmission, said the head of the HPA's respiratory diseases department, John Watson.

"In the light of the severity of the illness that has been identified in the two confirmed cases, immediate steps have been taken to ensure that people who have been in contact with the UK case have not been infected, and there is no evidence to suggest they have," he said.
