Dell's Inspiron Sale Screwup Enrages Buyers

Customers are fuming at Dell Computer after the company's widely promoted laptop sale went off the rails on Black Friday.

The Austin-based PC-maker oversold its widely promoted "doorbuster" laptop deal -- a 14-inch Inspiron 14z marked down to $299 from $599. Now, instead of canceling or delaying orders, Dell is trying to pass on a different, bigger model to customers.

In nearly two dozen emails to The Huffington Post on Wednesday, some anguished customers said Dell's delayed and minimal response to the issue prevented them from scooping up other laptop deals. Some reported losing out on cash-back deals with their credit cards after Dell switched their orders. Other customers agonized that the confusion and time spent trying to sort out their order has meant lost quality time with loved ones over the holiday.

"I?m quite devastated by this whole process, which has robbed me of hours of my life and time with family," wrote Michelle Wu, who works as an account manager in Los Angeles.

Have your holiday shopping plans been ruined by a store or some other glitch? Let us know: money@huffingtonpost.com.

On Wednesday, Dell spokeswoman Jennifer Davis said the problem originated with the high volume of traffic to the website and server issues on Black Friday that allowed the site to continue to receive orders, even after the computers had sold out.

Davis said Dell was impacted by the fact that the company already had a limited quantity of the units, and then by the site's delay. "When servers began operating again, those orders went through," she said.

The deal was one of the most widely anticipated in consumer electronics and was promoted as one of CNET's hottest holiday deals. It was made available on the company's website starting at midnight EST after Thanksgiving.

But nearly three days passed before the company contacted affected customers. Davis said the company emailed some customers that it had automatically replaced their Black Friday orders with a different computer model on Sunday afternoon.

That move had customers disappointed and even irate. The replacement computer, an Inspiron 15, is listed at a lower suggested retail price ($569) and has different specifications, including a larger screen size and heavier weight.

"They changed it without my permission, and gave me a vastly inferior product," Amarjeet Gill, a design engineer who lives in San Jose, Calif., and who tried to buy the original holiday deal, said in an email.

Like many customers, Gill said he did not want the different computer because he preferred the lighter, smaller model he had originally ordered. He said he tried multiple times to cancel the order and get his money back, but was frustrated after several different attempts to contact the company failed.

Davis said that the company is adding more customer service representatives to handle the increased call volume.

This is not the first time Dell has been in trouble with its customers. In 2008, a New York state judge ruled that the electronics company misled customers into buying products with promotions and financing deals for which they were not qualified. In the ruling, the judge wrote, "Dell has engaged in repeated misleading, deceptive and unlawful business conduct." After the ruling, the company set up a website where customers could apply for restitution.

More recently, the electronics company has fallen on tough times as PC sales decline and customers increasingly turn to tablets or smartphones. Earlier this month, the company reported that net income fell 47 percent for its fiscal third quarter and revenue declined 11 percent, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Dell was not the only retailer to experience computer system failures due to heavy online traffic for Black Friday deals. This week, Sam's Club also admitted that it had oversold on certain deal items. The company canceled the orders.

Brighten Up A Room With New Lighting | HomeSpot HQ Blog

Posted by chuck on Nov - 29 - 2012

Lighting Updates

Updating or augmenting your lighting within a room can be an excellent room update with only a minor investment. Lighting does more than just add light to a room, it conveys style and atmosphere to your space.? Simply plugging in a new lamp can make a noticeable difference and lighting really brightens a room!? Here are some tips to update your room with use of lighting.

lighting for home improvementFixtures

Chances are your room has an overhead light fixture operated via wall switch close to the door where you enter the room.? Swapping out this fixture is a simple task for most DIYers.? New fixtures can be found at any home center and the costs for a new one can be as low as $20. Most fixtures come in a variety of finishes including:? brass, gold, silver, bronze, antique, brushed nickel, chrome, white or black. Fixtures come in a variety of styles including: pendant, track-lighting, ceiling mount, chandelier, flush mount, semi flush mount, bowl pendant, linear suspension, spotlight, mono rail, recessed, drum pendant, and mini pendant. To install, be sure to turn off the power to the existing fixture before removing it.? Then follow the directions that accompany the new fixture to install.

Bulbs

There are many variations of bulbs available today including LED, CFL, Halogen, and the old standard incandescent.? Bulbs give off different types of light that are considered either warm or cool light.? Changing the type of bulbs you use along with the lumens will change the rooms atmosphere and feel. Lumens is the standard measure of light given off by light bulb.? A standard 100 watt incandescent bulb gives off 1600 lumens.? The higher the lumens the brighter the light.

Task Lighting

Add task lighting for different areas of the room.? Most bedrooms have a set of nightstands on both sides of the bed.? Adding a new matching set of nightstand lights is an inexpensive addition to update the look of your room.? Also, a new set of matching floor lamps are a great addition for rooms without nightstands.? You can get ideas of styles of task lighting lamps by visiting a lighting store, viewing interior design websites and printed magazines.?? If your budget does permit new lamps then consider simply updating the lampshades of your existing lamps.

Hitched: Don't Have Sex On Your Wedding Night

I remember climbing into Patrick?s pick-up truck in a fog of glittering sparklers. I remember noting that there was a giant penis shoe-polished on to the passenger side window. I remember taking an Instagram of us driving the few blocks back to our hotel. I remember being very excited about getting my shoes off.

And I remember being so, so exhausted. After our wedding, as soon as we got back to the hotel, I put on my tent-iest, most shapeless dress and some comfy Toms, curled up on the couch and said an enthusiastic ?Yes!? to my favorite question, which is: Do you want a beer?

We?d stocked up the suite?s fridge with beverages and invited anyone who wanted to after-party with us to stop by post-reception. In the weeks before the wedding, I thought we might have something of a post-wedding rager with all our out-of-town friends and really get to sit down and hang out and talk, the way you really can?t do at a wedding reception.

I was wrong. I was the tiredest, sleepiest person who had just made a lifetime commitment to the man of her dreams ever.?I really wanted to see all my old (and new!) friends. I really wanted to hear all about how the second floor of our hotel appeared to be hosting an extremely snazzy dance party. But mainly, I wanted to go to sleep.

So that?s what I did. I told everyone I was super sleepy and thank you for coming, but there is a bed with my name on it and I?m going to go get in it with my new husband. It was my last act of ?It?s my wedding day, I get to call the shots.? I looked with longing at the bottle of Johnnie Walker Black, unopened on the table. I told myself its time would come.

I, however, would not come. Not that night. Not on my wedding night. Because sex sounded like the most exhausting hassle. It sounded like something I should do and not much like something I wanted to do right that second.

Maybe I am the worst wife ever for not wanting to have a six-hour post-reception bone-a-thon, and my marriage is doomed because we didn?t consummate it at the first possible opportunity. I don?t care. Sleep was the release I needed.

I also knew that there was no way my over-analytical brain wouldn?t try to read something into wedding night sex. What if it was weird? What if I didn?t have an orgasm? What if we forgot how to do it? What if, what if, what if.

Wedding days are stressful and important days. They are days when people ask you an inordinate number of questions about tablecloths and mood lighting. They are not, I think, a day to imbue with the requirement that you have the best and most perfect sex of all time or else it means something.

Patrick and I were married for like, a full 14 hours before we were married married, if you know what I mean, and I think you do, because the word ?sex? is in the headline of this column. It was so nice to wake up the next morning, and have a leisurely and well-rested and pressure-free go at it.

After all, we?d lived together for over a year by the time we got married. It?s not like we were going into our wedding night blind. Tab A had Slot B pretty well figured out. It certainly wasn?t what 16-year-old Andrea, making ?True Love Waits? pledges at the church altar, had envisioned for herself.

As a teenager of the right-wing Christian variety, I prided myself on my virginity and also spent about 90 percent of my time trying to figure out ways to have orgasms with boys that didn?t involve vaginal penetration. I?m not saying it makes sense, but it was definitely a major pastime. I knew that on my wedding night, I would do that very special thing with that very special man, and everything would be just the way Jesus intended it.

Fast-forward a little over a decade, and I?m drooling on my pillow instead of at the first married sight of a penis. Things change.

You hear about people who go on no-sex-sprees in the weeks before their wedding, because they want to rev up the wedding night. I can see the appeal in that, the building of anticipation. I could jam on that. But I can also see the crushing disappointment that comes from putting so much emphasis on the successful performance of one particular activity ? a notoriously fickle and shifty one ? at one particular time. You just planned and executed what is ?supposed? to be the greatest day of all time forever in your life amen, and then you?re ?supposed? to have the craziest firework-spewing sex of all time? My ladybits clam up just thinking about it.

My advice: take a ?whatever happens, happens,? approach to getting it on that night. Really, take that approach to all things wedding-related, because shit is going to go awry. And that?s fine. It?s also fine to have high expectations. But don?t hang your future, your happiness or your future happiness on them.

Childproof iPhones, Hidden Facebook Photos, and Laundry Detergent

Childproof iPhones, Hidden Facebook Photos, and Laundry DetergentReaders offer their best tips for letting your child play with your iPhone, hiding Facebook photos, and cleaning detergent off your Laundry stuff.

Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips in our inbox, but for various reasons?maybe they're a bit too niche, maybe we couldn't find a good way to present it, or maybe we just couldn't fit it in?the tip didn't make the front page. From the Tips Box is where we round up some of our favorites for your buffet-style consumption. Got a tip of your own to share? Add it in the comments, email it to tips at lifehacker.com, or share it on our tips and expert pages.

Use a Metal Washer and Tape to Childproof Your IPhone's Home Button

Fragdemented saves his kid from frustrating home button presses:

Want to let your kid play with your iPhone, but get frustrated that they keep hitting the home button and exiting out of the game? This parental security tip is so simple, all it takes is the right sized washer and electrical tape.

Go to the hardware store and choose a washer that is slightly bigger than the home button on your iPhone. Then take some electrical tape (preferably a matching color to your phone) and wrap the phone in it with the washer placed over the home button.

Now you have a shield so your kid can't press the home button, but you can reach it in a pinch with a ball point pen. Just be sure not to press too hard or you'll leave an indent in the button!

Hide Facebook Pictures Instead of Deleting Them

Audiopocalypse keeps Facebook impulses in check:

If you want to delete an old Facebook picture, I recommend taking a step back. Don't impulse delete! Instead, you also have the option to hide a photo from everyone but yourself. If you delete it, there is no way to get back the comments or likes or history of it, which sucks if you ever change your mind.

To hide a photo, just open up the photo, click Edit, then under the permissions choose "Only Me."

Toss Your Detergent Cup In with the Laundry When It Gets Messy

Throw Away Drink Cups Without Making a Mess

Jvanderh shares a tip for fast foodies:

If you are throwing out a cup with some ice or a little bit of liquid left inside and don't want to make a mess, stick your extra napkins in it and then put the lid back on before tossing it.

Obviously, if you have a place to dump that liquid out, that would be a better option, but this works if you only have a little bit left since the napkin will soak it up. Photo by .

Male student gang-raped by muslim youth for cross-dressing. University: "Don't cross dress. You'll provoke it"

It's unclear from this story precisely what the response of the uni was. The headline states that dressing in drag has been banned (which may or may not include cross-dressing), yet the story only references them stating that doing so might provoke certain elements. Perhaps the statement could be clearer, I don't know without more complete information. However, they have an obligation to try to protect the safety of their students, regardless of the cause of the threat to their safety. At many colleges, women are advised not to walk to isolated parking facilities or home without company or escort at certain hours. This isn't blaming them for doing so if they should be assaulted in that event, but alerting them to a tangible danger in the community, and what they can do to minimize their risk.

I'm not suggesting this is all to this complex issue or their response to it, just that there are valid reasons for a uni issuing such warnings beyond inappropriate moralizing.

ps. Please shorten your thread titles.

AICN COMICS Q&@: The Writing Rambler talks ... - Ain't It Cool News

@@@ What the $% is AICN COMICS Q&@? @@@

Q?s by The Writing Rambler!
Hey all, The Writing Rambler here to share some words with you again. Normally I keep my presence contained to me crying over the state of the RED LANTERNS book and the rest of the DCU but today I'm here with a good old fashioned Q&A session with writer Brandon Easton. Brandon has been professionally writing since 2002 and has most recently been featured as a writer for the THUNDERCATS series on Cartoon Network and TRANSFORMERS: RESCUE BOTS for The Hub Network. Last year I had the pleasure of speaking with Brandon and discovering his graphic novel SHADOWLAW (which I reviewed here) to high praise. Brandon is back with a new kickstarter project for his graphic novel DOMINIONS LIGHT and he's here with me today to talk about his current project and his passion for this business of storytelling in general. Without further adieu, here we go:

THE WRITING RAMBLER (TWR): Hey Brandon, How's it going?

BRANDON EASTON (BE): Things are going well. Stuck under a few deadlines, but otherwise things are great! How are you?

TWR: Doing well, thanks! So for our readers who may not be totally familiar with your work how did you first get started?

BE: I broke into the comics biz back in 2002 with Pat Lee's DREAMWAVE COMICS on a title called Arkanium. I also worked on some Transformers: Armada stuff before moving on to redeveloping what would become my graphic novel Shadowlaw. Before that, I spent a few years working as a copywriter and editor with a side gig in a comic book store. I managed to make a lot of connections through that store and it led to many opportunities for me. I have to give a lot of credit to my creative writing teachers at Ithaca College who gave me a great deal of support and encouraged me to take a chance on my talents.

TWR: Now with Shadowlaw, I really love how you took so many different genres and made them work in one story. You could see all of your personal influences throughout the book. Did you find it hard to balance so many different genres (sci-fi, anime, vampires, etc.) while still completely making it engaging for the reader?

BE: Not really. If you have a complete understanding of the ideological underpinnings of each genre - in this case sci-fi (the impact of technology and forward progress on the individual internally and externally); vampires (a quasi-religious and sexual transfer of life energy) - then the balance will come from how the character responds to the situation. The true struggle I've had with Shadowlaw has been getting people to get over the "been there, done there" attitude because of the presence of vampires and giant robots/mechs.

A lot of people just assume it's some kind of soulless rip-off of other stuff without ever reading a single word. What's actually hard is finding a way to pitch it without sounding ridiculous while still touching on all the other incredible stuff within the story. I'll admit the story probably isn't for everyone, but there is an audience out there who hasn't had a chance to check out the book who I know would love it.

The trick is to find those readers who want more than just capes and costumes. There is endless talk of people supporting the independent graphic novel creators out there, but in the end people still run to Marvel and DC out of habit. I've reached out to the sci-fi and horror crowd with some success but cracking the core comic-reading audience with new concepts is very, very difficult.

Considering the fact that the concepts and story in Shadowlaw had never been done before made me believe there would be more excitement for the title. However, I understand that I have to keep creating new material and building my resume year after year.

TWR: It definitely was a breathe of fresh air for me. Now speaking of new concepts and material, you currently have your kickstarter project for your graphic novel DOMINION'S LIGHT happening. I know from checking out the project that this has been something you've been developing for some time now. Could you tell us a little about DOMINION'S LIGHT and how you went about bringing it to kickstarter?

BE: Dominion's Light is a sci-fi/fantasy hybrid. A basic pitch would be "Lord of the Rings meets Blade Runner" but it's much more complex than that. The story of Dominion?s Light centers around three characters (Reso, Khyshia and Hammerius Rex) that are thrust together because of personal tragedies that separate them from their homes and families. Once together, they realize that they have to stop a mighty warrior-sorcerer named Lord Valgon from tracking down the Key Ultima ? the only device in their world that can unlock the secrets of the Cyclean Bible. The Bible enables the user to manipulate the threads of space, time, energy and matter.

Ultimately, it is a journey of personal discovery for everyone, even the villains. Each person has a different reason for wanting the Cyclean Bible. Some want it for the ultimate power, some want it to fix their personal lives, and others want it in order to go back in time to create a perfect world free of pain and suffering. The themes of selfishness vs. sacrifice will ring clearly throughout the story.

The world in Dominion's Light is called Graid'yan (pronounced Gray-id-Eyan) and it is a visual pastiche of breathtaking vistas never seen before in a fantasy comic. Advanced technology and high sorcery have developed side by side, so readers will see things like complex airships that are actually aborted dragon fetuses; sniper rifles that use bullets made of dried tears of Titans; cities built on shining stalks of organic ice; rivers made of colonies of slugs and other fantastical stuff that will blow people's minds.

And that's just scratching the surface of that universe.

Kickstarter is something I've tried before in the past with little success, but that was when I first moved to LA with no credits under my belt. After doing some work on TV and having my graphic novel on the scene for roughly a year, I figured I should give it another shot. If I fail, I consider it a learning experience and will go back and rework the campaign. I want to make sure that I have proper funding for the two graphic novels that will eventually be collected into a 200-page hardcover. I can't afford to have my art teams suddenly vanish on me if they aren't paid on time or at a level they deserve. No matter what happens, I'm going to keep plugging forward until this project is finished.

TWR: It is definitely a very cool looking concept. I know you've spoken about it being much more of diverse experience than we've seen before in other sci-fi/fantasy stories. Would you say that's a goal of yours? To present a story that changes the faces of the "typical" heroes we so often see repeated in these genres?

BE: Not initially. When I originally developed Dominion's Light, I didn't have any kind of ethnic mandate in mind. In fact, the characters probably defaulted to being Caucasian because that's how we tend to view "normality" in our culture. We gauge what's universal by its proximity to White European images and values. That isn't always a bad thing but I just felt that it was time to have some heroic fantasy stories that reflected the nature of our 21st century globalized pop culture interchange.

I've enjoyed Tolkien's work over the years as I have Robert Jordan's WHEEL OF TIME series; I adore the GAME OF THRONES/SONF OF ICE & FIRE series (George R. R. Martin is just plain amazing on so many levels) and I am very enamored with Brandon Sanderson's newest work, although I have no idea when I will get a chance to finish The Way of Kings. When you examine these worlds closely, there usually aren't a lot of people of color as central characters. From time to time, you might get a token character who isn't well-developed compared to the main heroes. At worst you get the racial coding of people of color as Dark Elves, Orcs or other strange beasts. Just like in Dumbo they had those "Black" crows. Fans might say "those were just crows, stop complaining" but anyone with one millionth of a percent of common sense can figure out which racial group was used to inform those stereotypes.

I remember back in the day there was controversy in the Dungeons & Dragons RPG module about some race/tribe that had African features and physical characteristics but had innate low intelligence (LOL). Or there was no default non-White character in the classes. That kind of thing creates an atmosphere where continued exclusion of people of color in Fantasy becomes commonplace and normalized.

With all that said, I didn't set up Dominion's Light to be the Sesame Street of heroic fantasy. It's a dark, twisted world. I also created an African-American villain, something that hasn't been seen in a fantasy setting since James Earl Jones in the original Conan film. I could be wrong about that, but I believe that to be the case.

So much Fantasy has been reversed-engineered from Western European mythology and history that I think we've hit the wall for that kind of thing. Game of Thrones took it to the logical end of the spectrum with the endless rape, incest, murder and treachery that would exist in a feudal system without a human rights movement on the horizon. Now, we have so many other cultures and ideals that could be explored without excluding anyone. There will be all kinds of people in Dominion's Light. Some good, some neutral and some just plain screwed up. Just like the real world.

TWR: Well said and very true when you think about the core of most, if not all of the fantasy stories we have grown up around. Another theme that I've picked up on in my reading of SHADOWLAW and what I've taken from the concept of DOMINIONS LIGHT (with the Cyclean Bible) is how faith and/or religious overtones are reflected in your work. I noticed it especially with SHADOWLAW as the the idea of a theocracy plays a major theme in the book. Is that something that is just natural for you to include in your writing or did it just work well in the telling of the SHADOWLAW story?

BE: I was born and raised Roman Catholic from the state of Maryland which is rooted in a Catholic tradition historically. Although I am not at all pleased with the hierarchy of the Church, I am firmly rooted in a leftist/centrist Catholic tradition of believing in social justice, equality and fairness for all. I'm no longer what you would call "practicing" but the values and worth ethic instilled in me from the priests and nuns I grew up with is very much of part of how I view the world.

During my true intellectual awakening in college, I began to look back on the things I was taught through the lens of sociology, politics, economics and psychology and that helped me to understand the nature of human interaction through religion. How the elites members of society can easily manipulate people by telling them that "God wants you to do this, or God wants you to kill that, etc." Faith is a scary, dangerous and destructive thing in the wrong hands and we don't have to look far in this world to see how bad it can get.

When writing Shadowlaw, I tried to project where we would end up in about 200 years; developing a forecast through a natural social evolution of ideas. Things go in cycles, any student of history can tell you that. Right now, we're slowly moving away from religion as the unifying principle for humanity in the Western world but who knows how long that will last? I could see another "great awakening" in a couple of generations as fears of technological singularity and cybernetic conditioning send people in search of a more technologically pure time with simple answers from a protective authority in the sky.

Shadowlaw took place in a world on the edge of both traditions. That's why I believed that aspect of the story worked.

TWR: Yeah there were definitely points in reading where I thought "I could totally see some of this happening". I think those themes play well in storytelling especially when they can be incorporated with the idea of the nature of evil and how true faith can entail questioning the very system that often teaches it. One last question. Regardless of the outcome with the kickstarter campaign for DOMINIONS LIGHT (which I truly hope is a success), what should we expect to see you working on in the future?

BE: Thanks! I hope it makes the goal!

I'm working on some graphic novels for LION FORGE ENTERTAINMENT - they're a new transmedia company based out of St. Louis and they're going to be hitting the scene hard in 2013 with outstanding new properties in the digital arena. Those guys are smart, talented, driven and have an actual budget to realize their goals. I have to say I'm blessed to have met them a couple of years ago; being around folks like that is truly inspirational.

I've been working with Anthony Montgomery (Ensign Mayweather from Star Trek: Enterprise) on his new graphic novel series MILES AWAY, about a teen superhero and his quest to discover his past, and that's been a fantastic experience overall. It was the first real collaboration I've done with an established performer and I couldn't have asked for a better dude to work with. I want that book to be as successful as my own stuff.

Beyond that, I am in the planning stages for several large projects. In the first half of 2013, production will begin on a documentary about Black sci-fi and fantasy writers and their struggles in the industry. Once that is completed, I will shoot a short sci-fi piece on digital video about a soldier caught between two sides in a futuristic war setting. I have a web comic called RETAILIATION (emphasis on the retail) for January 2013 that would best be described as a cross between CLERKS and SWINGERS. It's a semi-autobiographic romp about my time working in an upscale bookstore in West Los Angeles as an overweight guy surrounded by incredibly shallow and moronic people.

There's this big space opera concept that I've had in my head for 15 years that I feel I'm getting closer to figuring out. It's going to be as epic as Gundam, Star Trek and BSG all rolled up into a giant package. That should be coming down the pike in 2014. I just need to get a prescription for Adderal if I plan on getting this stuff done!

TWR: Yeah you definitely have your hands full going forward but I can't wait to see what comes from all the hard work you've been putting in. Here's to hoping DOMINIONS LIGHT is a success and I look very forward to checking it out once its completed. Thanks so much for chatting with us today Brandon and hopefully well speak again soon.

How do seemingly ordinary people become the kind of leaders who have a meaningful and often lasting impact on the lives of those in need? The authors share their insights and the stories of these remarkable people in a groundbreaking new book, The Humanitarian Leader in Each of Us: 7 Choices That Shape a Socially Responsible Life (a SAGE book).

Based on five years of research, authors Frank LaFasto, Ph.D., and Carl Larson, Ph.D. traced a path of the pivotal choices of 31 humanitarian leaders. They identified leveraging one's own life experiences to connect deeply and personally with a need in society, leading the way for others by creating energy and passion for a worthwhile cause, experiencing a sense of fairness, believing we can matter, and having a predisposition to respond as some of the choices that are key to becoming the kind of leader who takes charge of making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Among the 31 people LaFasto and Larson interviewed were: Susie Scott Krabacher, a former Playboy centerfold who has devoted her life to helping women and children in the desperate slums of Haiti; Ryan Hreljac, who at age 6 launched an organization to build wells in countries where water is scarce; Larry Bradley, a U.S. Army major in Iraq who mobilized an international effort to save the life of one local boy; Bill Sergeant, who led Rotary International's campaign to eradicate polio from the face of the earth; and Inderjit Khurana, a teacher in India who founded a string of train platform schools to educate impoverished street children.

The authors wrote, "We believe that leadership is too often examined as something that occurs in moments of great drama, with the world as its stage, media scurrying and floodlights glaring. We have been reminded, through this research, that leadership often occurs in relatively lonely moments, in small acts of great courage."

In this inspirational new book, LaFasto and Larson expand the domain of leadership, proving that with motivation, energy, and perseverance, anyone can take charge of making a difference in society. The authors show how each of us can translate our good intentions into good deedsand enrich our own lives along the way.

Based on five years of research, authors Frank LaFasto, Ph.D., and Carl Larson, Ph.D. traced a path of the pivotal choices of 31 humanitarian leaders. jacques Site - Daily Tips for Business: Workplace Communication ...

Well, as an entrepreneur I used to laugh at people who wanted to come to work for my company and on their resume they put that they had a Business Communications Degree. I used to think that they studied business communications because it was an easy subject in school, one that you could learn without having to deal with too much math, perhaps even taking the easy way out. Nevertheless workplace communication is an essential tool, and without it your business will not operate efficiently, and you are bound to get your wires crossed more often than not.

China praises engineer in aircraft carrier program

In this undated photo released by China's Xinhua News Agency, made available on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, a carrier-borne J-15 fighter jet takes off from China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning. China has successfully landed a fighter jet on its first aircraft carrier, which entered service two months ago, the country's official news agency confirmed Sunday. The Liaoning aircraft carrier underscores China's ambitions to be a leading Asian naval power, but it is not expected to carry a full complement of planes or be ready for combat for some time. (AP) ? China's government gave hero's praise Monday to a senior engineer on its aircraft carrier program who died of a heart attack after witnessing the first landing of a plane on the ship, underscoring the project's huge national prestige.

State broadcaster CCTV ran news of Luo Yuan's death as its first item on the noon news broadcast, an unusual honor for a scientist who was previously unknown outside of the carrier program. Luo, 51, oversaw the development of the J-15 fighter-bomber planes designated for the ship, which is called Liaoning after the province where it is based.

The coverage illustrates the priority Beijing has placed on the program, seen as representing China's rise from poverty to economic and political might over the past three decades. The carrier was built in the former Soviet Union and is seen as a test platform for future Chinese-built vessels.

Few details were available about Luo, who died Sunday. A man who answered the phone at his employer, the Shenyang Aircraft Corp., confirmed his death but declined to give details. The company produces the bulk of China's modern military jets ? many of them, like the J-15, derived from Russian models.

Chinese academics assigned to signature government projects such as the carrier are often under enormous pressure, and stress is considered among the biggest killers of the country's intellectuals. China overcame major technical hurdles to make the carrier seaworthy after buying the half-completed hulk from the Ukraine and towing it to China, minus its engines, weaponry and navigation systems.

Most of that work was carried out in the northeastern port of Dalian, to which the carrier returned on Sunday following its latest round of sea trials.

Despite the breakthrough in air operations, the ship is still years away from being battle-worthy. China's navy still needs to show it can operate large numbers of planes at the same time and organize a carrier battle group that includes submarines and support ships.

"The first landing may be a milestone, but it's just the beginning," said Toshi Yoshihara, professor of Asia-Pacific studies at the U.S. Naval War College in Rhode Island. "How the Chinese will handle aircraft losses, which are inevitable, is a better indicator of Beijing's determination to become a carrier."

It's just people. They're billions of them and they're mostly a burden. The time will come when you meet some bitch, settle down, and have kids. Just enjoy what you got until then.

In these days, you can get 2 hours with a bombshell hottie escort in whatever flavor you want, with a cherry on top for $300 to tide you over as well.? Google escorts + your city.? Stay away from the $50 specials....? Lol!

Im not looking for sex. Im looking for a friend, someone to talk to, someone to spend time with. It is depressing being alone all the time and I am becoming more and more anti-social as the days go by. My panic attacks are getting worse too when im around other people. All I do is try to stay strong and "man the fuck up", and nothing positive comes from it. This dating site thing was a last ditch effort to try to meet people... I havent felt SO shitty and worthless than I do now. I try to rationalize it and think of reasons why not a single fucking person has even given me even a shred of a chance, like maybe I posted some bad pictures or maybe my profile is poorly written. I seriously do not understand anymore and its making me hate who I am... like Im not good enough for ANYONE, not a single fucking human being on this planet:sad: It is SO disheartening, I cannot begin to express the pain I feel on a daily basis, because I feel like such a loser, SUCH a loner.

What is the point of all this pain? What is the point of trying SO FUCKING HARD and seeing 0 results? Not even once! I cannot even justify those odds with a positive thought.

hey, OP, have you thought about maybe attending some local shroomery gatherings? the people here are great and many of them would love to be your friends, i'm sure.

i'm probably not anywhere close to you, i'm not really close to anyone, but i do have a PM box that is always open to those who wish to use it. i know you want someone to hang out with, but i can offer what i can give. if you ever need to really talk, just shoot me a PM and you can have at least a moment of my time, mostly likely more.

(don't be discouraged if i don't respond RIGHT away though, i will thoughtfully respond when i know i have sufficient time to. ^_^)

Sorry to hear your situation.? The only advice I can offer up is to figure out what hobbies and activities you enjoy outside of work, and engage in them locally.? Sharing time in a group with people who share your interest is a inherent precursor to friends.

I recently broke up with my long-term girlfriend after we had moved together to a new city.? Now I've lost my social safety net, and I've gotta get back into the world again.? I'm about go embark on the same journey you NEED to embark on:

Seeking out local interests.

Go do it. Today.

Join a chess club, yoga, shooting club, local kickball league, ANYTHING.? Just go there, try to be friendly but not creepy/needy/isolated/etc.? You know, all that normal shit.

Try to have a good time.? Grab a drink or two at home before you go to the place if you want to take a edge off (just don't become reliant on this, or people might pick up on it and assume you an alcoholic).

ive become VERY VERY withheld when it comes to meeting groups of people... i have panic attacks even being around good people... and I do actually do Yoga, which I LOVE. Im afraid to show weakness around people. and even when im doing yoga, which is supposed to be extremely relaxing.. it takes a LOT to hold back the panic attacks.

Aw, OP, I really feel for you because I've had anxiety before and though it wasn't caused by social situations it would still effect social situations. And when I first moved to Philly I knew literally no one, I moved in the summer before I started college and I just felt lonely and lost and it was terrible.

I think that you should seek help for your anxiety. I can guarantee you that the things you think about yourself are mainly borne out of that anxiety. Once you get to the root cause of that and learn to manage it, being social will become so much easier and thus, meeting people!
I really hope things look up for you!

Smoke in the Texas sun - They were young once too.
Your mom, she found Jesus
While your old man stepped out and drew up his veins

It's quiet, in the house of the old
You can hear through grinding teeth, clocks takin' their toll
'Cause time has a mind of it's own
And like our sun spinnin' 'round, it won't slow for you now

Don't mean to hijack, but what if you are introverted and find it hard to talk to people? I'm in a similar boat and I'm deeply involved in a couple activities. But in most cases, I don't see the same people outside the activity.

those girls on okcupid get literally 100s of messages a day. the ratio between guys to girls on there is absurd. even average looking uninteresting girls get hit up constantly so their egos are out of touch with reality. it is 100% a numbers game, if you are above average looks wise, tall, and have your life on track, still only like 1 in 20 attractive girls will respond to you, so its not just you lol.

Not in my experience; perhaps the ratio is skewed, but not insanely so, I believe. Not on OKCupid at least.

There's some truth in this. It's funny, you see, because on dating sites, you'd expect people to show their best side. What happens though, is that women transform magically into arrogant ice queens and men into testosterone-driven baboons. It's the consequence of the online dating dynamic. Men send out 100s of messages because they know only 1% will receive a response (well, up to 20% if you're lucky, but not more than that). Needless to say, these messages aren't all very-well thought through, because otherwise, online dating would actually be a full-time job. So women get annoyed by the standard messages they receive and don't bother to answer the vast majority of them. Which leads the men to send out even more messages, and so forth.

If you want to experience the ugliest side of humans, either watch a documentary about the Nazis or join OKCupid

I have no evidence to back my opinion about these online dating services, but I kinda think there is disproportionate number of people looking to fuck around on their husbands/wives/spouses, etc.

Oh, there's always a healthy share of cheaters, swingers, cuckolders and poly's on there. Most of them actually drop hints about it in their profiles, especially on OKCupid, so if you keep your eyes open, it's usually pretty clear.
