Thank Federal Communications Commission For Looking Out For ...

By Kristen Carey

Target: Julius Genachowski, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission

Goal: Thank the FCC for standing up for consumers against AT&T?s policy of overcharging customers for cellular data plans

Recently, the Federal Communications Commission and AT&T settled a matter for $700,000. This agreement comes in the wake of a legal battle between the federal agency and the cell phone service provider. The FCC had been investigating AT&T for a year.?The trouble with AT&T started in 2009, when reports of overcharging customers began surfacing. Originally, AT&T had offered a ?pay as you go? plan for data usage; however, the company switched to using only monthly data plans. The customers who had the pay as you go plan before the switch were to be grandfathered in and not required to pay the monthly fees, yet many customers were forced to pay those charges.

In this day and age, almost every adult, and even many children, are dependent on cell phones not only for personal communication but also for work related tasks. Cell phone companies need to be kept in check and not be allowed to reap harsh charges on their customers. Federal agencies like the Federal Communications Commission are important for keeping companies from taking advantage of consumers.

Sign the petition letter below, and thank the Federal Communications Commission for looking out for consumers and forcing companies to charge fair rates. People are more important than companies, and the FCC is making sure that message is getting spread. In this time of great economic uncertainty, this extra care for the consumer comes with a sigh of relief.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Julius Genachowski, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission,

Recently, the Federal Communications Commission settled a yearlong investigation with AT&T, ending with the cell phone company paying a fine of $700,000. This news is of great importance to consumers within the United States.

AT&T had promised customers with ?pay as you go? monthly plans that they would be grandfathered in and exempt from paying new charges for exclusively monthly data usage plans. However, it soon became apparent that AT&T started assessing those charges on the customers in question and overcharged them for their cell phone usage.

With almost every adult individual dependent on cell phones for many facets of everyday life, this settlement is extremely important. Cell phone service providers need to be kept in check and prevented from overcharging and taking advantage of their customers. Your investigation of AT&T and the resulting fines are integral to fair business practices in the age of technology.

Thank you for looking out for the consumer and reminding big businesses that people are more important than profit. Please continue to pursue companies that overcharge for their services and take advantage of customers. In these times of great economic uncertainty, knowing there is an agency looking out for the everyday individual is of great comfort.

Sincerely,
