UNO professor gets award from geography honor society | NOLA.com

James Lowry, chairman of the University of New Orleans' geography department, has received the 2012 Distinguished Service Award from Gamma Theta Upsilon, the international honor society in that subject. Lowry, who joined the UNO faculty in 2006,?is an associate professor.

In addition to starting a Gamma Theta Upsilon chapter at UNO, he was named?the organization's national second vice president in 2007. A year later, he became its executive secretary.

His teaching and research focus on cultural ecology and natural hazards.
